Reform Means Planning for Healthcare System Wellness

Wellness is not simply an absence of illness, it is an active process of becoming aware, planning for, and carrying out healthy choices that bring about positive change.

Understanding and maintaining wellness is critical in every one of our lives ? and in the lives of the people we serve who are recovering from mental illnesses and substance use disorders.

As members of the behavioral health community, we must engage in the active process of becoming aware, planning for, and carrying on the hard work of healthcare system reform. This kind of healthcare system wellness is our responsibility. Federal healthcare reform legislation is a big step in the right direction. However, maintaining wellness is an ongoing process. In considering the wellness of our healthcare system there are several dimensions we as providers and consumers of healthcare services should be attending to.

These dimensions of healthcare system wellness include funding, health information technology, service provision, quality improvement and research. Some examples of the planning and activities we can take part in.

Funding

- Reform the payment system to stop the promotion of paying for procedures and replacing it with payment based on the quality care.

- Aggressive reform of billing practices that stymie providers from making the necessary changes to create seamless healthcare services. Including funding for coordination of care, case management, transportation and allowing providers in every state to bill for more than one service in a day in the same clinic.

Health Information Technology

- The development of patient registries for the uniform collection of clinical and administrative data. Registries will allow for better monitoring and continuity of care while helping to make the business case for behavioral and primary care services integration

- Making sure that our electronic health records are compliant with Health Level Seven (HL7) international interoperability standards. Required by the US Department of Health and Human Services, these standards will enable electronic medical records to exchange, manage and share information between providers.

Service Provision

- Adoption of the healthcare home approach to care. This approach requires a bi-directional care provision which challenges the traditional thinking about how providers work with one another. Specialty mental health and primary care providers must reach out to one another and work in a coordinated fashion to provide disease management services for people with severe mental illness and/or substance use conditions.

- The implementation of wellness programming as a Medical Home standard of care for all people diagnosed with a severe mental illness and/or substance use condition.

- The expansion of peer-led wellness programming as an effective way to promote healthy living and care coordination.

- Improving the surveillance capacity at the state and local levels. This includes the ability to provide early identification of mental and substance use disorders as well as the morbidity and mortality tied to these conditions.

Quality Improvement

- The training of staff in the use of lean techniques for quality improvement. These approaches build on the Plan-Do-Study-Act model to rapid cycle improvement for services monitoring and enhancement.

- The continued standardization of screening and treatment processes through the use of evidence-based practices and validated measures.

- With the development of sophisticated electronic medical records healthcare organizations have more access to data than ever before. Learning how to use data to monitor and create positive change in our organizations is required if we are going to succeed in this new age of healthcare.

Research

- Every year billions of tax dollars are spent on research that is directly related to the services we provide to consumers and their families every day. It is only through engaging the research community in a discussion about how to better work together that practice can become informed by research and research by practice.

The behavioral health community has come together to help make Healthcare Reform a reality. Maintaining these gains while continuing to improve the behavioral healthcare system requires we become engaged in the activities inherent to wellness, namely awareness building, planning and the continued hard work that comes from creating high quality services.

How to Install the Windows XP Built In Fax Service

With only a simple set up, you can install a fax machine program on Windows XP, letting you use your computer as a fax machine. The fax software is already paid for ? there?s nothing extra to purchase to make your computer into a fax. It?s incredible to think that kind of functionality has been built into the Windows XP operating system.

Change your options over to faxing from your computer. It deserves serious consideration as it will let you manage your business easier. You can then just use your printer or scanner to transmit documents. It?s a great way to save space on the desk, and reduce the amount of technology you have around the office.

Fax machines can be problematic because they have a tendency to jam or run out of paper and toner. It?s so easy to have one small hiccup and lose all your transmissions. First a paper jam happens. Next, you find that you have to unplug the machine and you?ve just lost all the faxes from memory. Having a computer manage the faxes that you send an receive can make it much easier for the office, as well as making it more cost effective.

Here?s what you do: Click ?Start?, ?Control Panel?, ?Add/Remove programs?. Click ?Add/Remove Windows Components? on the left side.

When the window opens, scroll through and make sure the Fax Services box is checked. Click ?Next? and follow the prompts. You will be asked to insert your Windows XP CD. Click ?Finish? when the Wizard is done.

Now to configure the service: Click ?Start?, ?All Programs?, ?Accessories?, ?Communications?, ?Fax? and finally ? ?Fax Console?.

This will start the fax console configuration wizard. When it start up, enter the information as requested. Then choose which modem to use, and then whether you want your computer to have the ability to receive faxes, send faxes, or do both.

There are options for TSID and CSID. TSID is the information that appears on the header of any faxes that you send. CSID is the information that gets displayed on the fax machine that is sending. Usually, this information is the business name and fax number, and helps with confirmation pages and proving that your fax was in fact sent.

Another option to configure is whether you want the fax machine to automatically or manually answer the phone line. Automatically answering will mean that when the phone line rings, the fax will automatically answer the phone and try to receive a fax. Manually means that when the phone line rings, you will have to be at your computer and press a button in order for the fax part of the Windows XP fax to pick up and answers the line.

Done! Now you can send and/or receive faxes! If you want to of course. You can manage your Faxes by clicking ?Start?, Accessories?, ?Communications?, ?Fax?.

Sawfish skewer species with serrated snout, say scientists

Australian scientists at the University of Queensland have found that the endangered sawfish uses its eponymous nose for a variety of tasks.

Their long snouts lined with pointy teeth make sawfishes hard to miss. But just how these endangered creatures use their toothy snouts called saws hasn't been well understood.

By observing captured freshwater-dwelling Pristis microdon sawfishes, scientists have found the fish use sensors in their saws to detect other fish, their prey, and to swipe at them with enough force to impale their dinner.

The team, led by Barbara Wueringer of the University of Queensland in Australia, found that the sawfishes tore into the already dead fish they were fed, swiping side-to-side several times per second. The swipes were strong enough to split the fish in half.

The sawfish then used their snouts to pin their meal onto the bottom of the aquarium to eat it.

Scientists already knew that freshwater sawfishes ? which hunt in murky waters along coastlines and in rivers ? have tiny receptors on their saws that pick up on electrical fields produced by their prey, as well as sensors that detect movements in the water.

In the new research, the scientists used weak electrical fields to simulate prey, and watched as the sawfish responded.

Previously, scientists had observed another species of sawfish, Pristis pectinata, attacking pieces of fish floating in the water, suggesting its use in obtaining food. It has also been suggested that sawfish use their saws to rake through the sand to find buried prey, cut chunks out of whales and slash at schooling fish, according to Wueringer and colleagues.

The new study, detailed in the March 6 issue of the journal Current Biology, suggests their saws make them agile hunters, not just for their sensory features but also for their capability of sawing into prey.

"Sawfish are skilled predators but, ironically, the saw is partly to blame for their global decline: The saw is easily entangled in fishing gear, perhaps as a result of targeting prey caught in the net," they write.

It is hoped that a better understanding of how this sawfish ? which is?critically endangered according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature ? forages for food can help prevent sawfish from being killed by fishing efforts aimed at other species, they write.

Lessons From The Mat | Running With Perseverance

My son is wrapping up his last year of wrestling today, making his second and final appearance in the ?national? championship tournament for his league. Over the years, I have gone from barely being able to watch his matches to being an ardent fan with great respect for the sport.

The first year my son wrestled, I wasn?t into it at all. I didn?t really enjoy watching the boys, and felt so barbaric cheering them on. As the season wore on, I understood the sport more, could follow the scoring, and figured out why you need to ?lift his head!? when you have your competitor on his back (to force the shoulders on the ground to earn a pin). Still, when the season was over, I looked forward to cheering on the lacrosse team instead.

It took his second year for me to start to enjoy the matches. Well, I still don?t like it when the boys seem to bend their necks more than they should be able to go, or when arms and shoulders get twisted back too far, but for the most part, they wrestle ?clean? without hurting each other.

boys,competitions,leisure,males,men,people,persons,recreation,sports,wrestlers,wrestling,wrestling matches

What I have really come to appreciate is how demanding wrestling is as a sport. Sure, a round may only last for 2 minutes, but you try keeping your shoulders off the ground for even 30 seconds using only your core strength while someone your weight is on top of you using all of his weight to try to push you down. There is also strategy in figuring out how to flip your opponent over without losing control and getting flipped yourself. I see it in the boys? faces as they try a move, reconsider, reset, and try again.

Wrestling offers so many lessons:

  • It ain?t over until it?s over. You can be way ahead in points, but if you get careless, or tired, or the other guy gets lucky, you can find yourself on your back with the referee checking your shoulder blades for a pin. The good news is that this holds true when you are behind. There is always a chance that you can pin your opponent and win as long as you stay in the match and keep trying.

View Details

  • Every second counts. A match can change direction so quickly. The wrestler who initiates a take-down may quickly find himself flat on the mat. The wrestler on the bottom may be able to flip around if his opponent is too high up on his back. Even if you are on your back, if you can keep a shoulder blade off the mat until the clock runs out, you may be able to escape a pin. Sometimes it seems that sheer determination earns the win.

?balances,households,scales,weights

  • The number on the scale doesn?t tell you everything. Each weight class is separated by 5-17 pounds (at the higher weights) and most boys try to be at or near the high end of their weight class. That means that boys in the same weight class should weigh about the same, but they often look very different. There are boys with tall and lanky builds, boys with short and stocky builds, and every build in between. It?s not clear that either build necessarily has an advantage. More often it is skill (and maybe a bit of luck) that determines the winner?I?ve seen boys with different builds dominate their matches.
  • You need to work with what you have. If you are tall and lanky, you need to use that height (and leverage) to your advantage. If you are short and stocky, you need to make that strength and stability work for you. No matter what your size, you can hone your skills and agility so you will be able to respond to your opponent?s strengths.

Another thing I really enjoyed about following my son?s wrestling team was the team ?family.? Parents make an effort to come to the matches and everyone cheers on each wrestler. It is fun to watch the boys grow and mature as the season goes on, and it is great to get to know the other parents as we pass the time between matches during the day-long tournaments.

It is also nice to see the boys come together as a team. While wrestling is a very individual sport, the boys seem to support each other in a way that we don?t see with other sports. It is so heart-warming to see these ?tough guys? giving each?other pep-talks, coaching each other through tough matches, helping each other shake off rough losses, and coming together to celebrate hard-earned victories.

Four years ago I never would have thought that I?d be sad to see my last wrestling tournament, but now wrestling is the first ?last? that I am getting sentimental about as my son finishes his senior year of high school.

Did you play a sport in high school?
