Student loans: Is petition to forgive debt completely a good idea?

Students and parents will think so. But blanket amnesty for all student loans could destroy the student-loan system and might not do much to address the underlying problem.?

Large numbers tend to get people?s attention, especially the 13-digit kind. So now with news that student college debt is hitting the $1,000,000,000,000 mark, everyone seems to be talking about it.

President Obama wants to delay the interest-rate hike on government-backed student loans scheduled for this July and will say so in his Saturday radio address ? and then again when he hits college campuses next week to promote the plan. For their part, Department of Education officials stood up for the plan on Friday. And April 25, the Occupy movement is set to occupy colleges to highlight the issue.?

But an online petition that has gathered nearly 700,000 signatures has a better idea ? erase the debt completely, says creator Robert Applebaum.

?Forgiving the student loan debt of all Americans will have an immediate stimulative effect on our economy," he says in the petition. "With the stroke of the president's pen, millions of Americans would suddenly have hundreds, or in some cases, thousands of extra dollars in their pockets each and every month to spend on ailing sectors of the economy."

Forgiving student loan debt, he adds, ?rather than tax cuts for corporations, millionaires, and billionaires, has a much greater chance of helping to raise [the economic] tide in a much shorter time-frame.?

But while the idea has certainly gotten the ear of beleaguered grads ? and their families ? erasing a?trillion dollars of debt by presidential fiat could destroy the future of college loans while doing nothing to address the underlying problem, economists and financial experts say.

Regardless of whether the loan is a government or private loan, forgiveness will mean someone loses. Either the taxpayers in aggregate in the case of federal loans or private lenders on private loans

?Who in their right mind, A) would make loans to students if the loans can be forgiven later on? Or B) invest in an income trust vehicle where the asset of the investment can disappear due to 'forgiveness?' ??says?Kevin Worthley, a?certified financial planner in?Rhode Island and a specialist in college financial strategies,?via e-mail.?

Even if there were lenders willing to risk their money, ?the interest rate they would rightfully require for the risk incurred may likely be far more than future students would be willing to pay and cries of 'usury' to the government could result,? he adds.

Credit is?fundamentally based upon trust, agrees?Mitchell Weiss, adjunct professor at the University of Hartford's?Barney School of Business?in Connecticut.

?If I loan you some money, I trust that you?re going to pay it back to me,? he says. ?Wholesale forgiveness, amnesty ? whatever you want to call it ? will fundamentally undermine a process that is thoroughly integrated within our society.??

Moreover, it doesn't really solve the problem, says Professor Weiss.

?Students need better financial tools," says Weiss, the author of ?Life Happens,? a textbook for student financial planning. "But the laws need to be adjusted as well, Bankruptcy laws need to be amended."

A 2005 change in bankruptcy law means that "education loans are not dischargeable in bankruptcy except in cases of undue hardship.? This, he says, "is really tough to prove.?

Loosening the law would give lenders and ex-students more leeway to find compromises, he says.?

?When a lender knows that the person that?s sitting on the other side of the table has the ability to pull the plug by declaring bankruptcy, and ... that lender doesn?t have collateral to foreclose upon in order to make itself whole, then that lender is pretty motivated to find a compromise solution to avoid the loss that would surely follow,? he says.?

Will the petition make any difference?

Possibly, says Lindsay Hoffman, communication professor at the University of Delaware. Online social media has the ability to reverse the relationship between the government and the governed, she notes.

?Politicians used to set out what they thought was important and voters would respond,? she says, but ?what we are seeing here is a reversal of the agenda-setting process.?

Increasingly powerful social media tools such as this online petition have the power to ?set the agenda and politicians respond to those collective voices being raised.?

"That,? she says, ?is something new.?

Indeed, the political action group Moveon.org has picked up on the momentum behind Mr. Applebaum's original petition to funnel support to a bill now before Congress, the Student Loan Forgiveness Act of 2012, which would help students with loans ? though it is not a complete amnesty.?

LMFAO on American Idol: Sorry For Party Rocking!

American Idol featured a pair of contrasting performances on its latest results show.

Indeed, prior to narrowing down the season 11 field to six contestants - did you agree with the elimination of Colton Dixon? - former series winner Kris Allen took to the stage, sat behind a piano and calmly belted out a version of the first single off his new album.

Later, following a tribute to Dick Clark, LMFAFO also entertained the audience, but this group did so in a slightly different manner than Allen. Case in point: there were dancing zebras on stage. And a lot of yelling.

Watch the group's rendition of "Sorry For Party Rocking" now.

Italy goes big to save Venice as it sinks into the sea

A multibillion-dollar flood-prevention system will be put in place starting next year, a decade after the project began.

Venetians have been coping with tidal flooding, or ?acqua alta,? for centuries. A recent study suggests the problem may be worsening faster than previously believed.

But a multibillion-dollar system to be implemented starting next year could help prevent major flooding, according to two engineers who presented the project yesterday at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Mass.

According to scientists from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, the University of Miami, and Tele-Rilevamento Europa, an Italian company specializing in ground deformation measurement, the lagoon city is sinking, and won?t stop any time soon.

The team, who published their findings in the March issue of Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, a journal of the American Geophysical Union, combined GPS and space-borne radar information on the lagoon over the past 10 years and came to the conclusion that the city is sinking about two millimeters (0.08 inches) per year. This contradicts previous studies, according to which Venice?s land subsidence, the scientific term that refers to its slow sinking into the waters, had stopped after the city discontinued groundwater pumping in the 1990s, as reported by the Italian newspaper Il Gazzettino.

?It?s a small effect, but it?s important,? lead author Yehuda Bock said in a press release.

In 20 years, the study says, 80 millimeters (3.2 inches) of the lagoon will be taken over by the sea. But that is not the only thing Venetians should be worried about: The city is also tilting eastward, a problem the authors of the research say wasn?t detected in other studies.

So, is Venice doomed? ?Perhaps not. First of all, some question the study?s methodological approach. Pierpaolo Campostrini, director of Corila, a Venice-based research center that studies the lagoon, told Italian daily Corriere della Sera that subsidence may not be constant. ?It could accelerate or slow down,? he said.

Then there is Mose, a complex 5 billion euro ($6.5 billion) flood-prevention system part of which will be operational in 2013 ? 10 years after the project, one of Italy's largest public works, first began. Mose engineers Maria Teresa Brotto and Giovanni Cecconi were at MIT yesterday to present the project, which MIT faculty helped to develop. Mose?s four barriers, placed in the water at the lagoon?s inlets, are designed to rise with the water level, thus protecting the lagoon from flooding.

The goal, Mr. Cecconi said, is ?to keep the water level under 100 centimeters [3.28 feet]? in the city. Critics of the project, however, are concerned about its environmental impact and its maintenance costs, which Ms. Brotto said will amount to 15 to 20 million euros per year.

Private Label Products - Guaranteed Marketable

There has been a lot of information with regard to private label merchandise. According to a lot of reports, this has been a remarkable idea for salespeople on the Internet. Usually, people in this endeavor are in search of earning big in a fast way, among other things. Still, many people have no clue what these types of products are. Even if many have already benefited from marketing such products, more people need to be informed concerning its advantages and disadvantages.
?
Private label merchandise

These are products that are directly purchased. And then these can be changed or sold as is to any buyer preferred. Basically, when the products are purchased from the seller, the products are now owned by the buyer and whatever purpose the product may serve them is contingent to the owner.

This process is somewhat similar to innovating and then making one?s own product. Selling the product can follow after; however, exceptional from this particular case wherein the product is purchased from the seller and the buyer then sells it to others who are interested. ?

Advantages of the products

? Easy to purchase
Most of the time, the idea is perceived by some individuals in the wrong way. They assume that in order for them to sell items on the Internet, the products have to be made directly by them. That is definitely viable, but not necessarily always the case. Rather than innovating and creating products on your own, private label items can be purchased. These can be sold again to other clienteles. Apparently, these products are not difficult to buy and are easy to sell as well.

The purchaser does not have to exhaust innumerable hours modifying the item when it can just easily be sold as is. Simply brand it and then sell it to consumers. ? ?
?
? Speed
Marketing online is a continuously developing area of business. Ideas or concepts that are effective these days may not be as effective and feasible at another time. Sellers or retailers need to consider new product items every so often. Although, this part of the business may not be as easy as it seems. It is not easy to come up with new-fangled products fast enough. Therefore, these products that are available now that can be branded are the solution to this dilemma. Businesses and individuals can buy these new products fast and carry on with the demand of consumers. ?

? Products can be modified
Resell rights licenses of manufacturers indicate that products bought from them cannot be modified or tweaked in any way. However, when it comes to private label products, buyers have no problem with tweaking them. The Buyers are allowed to modify the product without violating any law. The reason for this is when a buyer acquires a product, the rights of the private label products are now owned by the purchaser as specified by law.

? Vast merchandises are saleable
It can be immensely disappointing to acquire products and in the end see them not marketable. It is not necessary to undergo this process of hit and miss. It is always possible to buy private label products that can be successful and surely marketable. Probably, guaranteed marketability is the best advantage for these types of products.

Madden '13 Cover Clash: Cam Newton vs. Calvin Johnson!

Cam Newton won the NFL's Rookie of the Year Award last year, but the prolific passer is now after something far more important.

An ongoing fan vote to determine who should grace the cover of wildly-poplar video game Madden '13 is down to the Carolina Panthers quarterback and Calvin Johnson of the Detroit Lions.

And in an attempt to win over the masses, Newton has released a lengthy video, pleading to boys, girls, cat and dogs that he deserves the honor. On what grounds?

Well, he's quite adept at the game, that's for certain, giving fans a tour here of his multi-screen setup. His nicknames also include "Mr. Swagman" and "Mr. Goes H.A.M." So he has that going for him.

Last season, Peyton Hillis of the Browns covered Madden... and proceeded to produce the worst season of his career. Careful of what you wish for, Cam.

Who do you want to see on the cover of Madden '13?

Interphase's Penvue interactive display system highlights its strengths (video)

If you've ever been on the receiving end of "death by PowerPoint," you'll know just how tiresome a passive presentation can be. Interphase hopes its new Penvue (pronounced Pen-View) portable interactive display system can maybe help spice things up a little. The hand-held unit is about the size of a mouse, and has a corresponding wireless receiver that plugs into anything with a VGA connection. Using "invisible targets" based on missile technology, you can digitally draw on whatever screen you are using it with, altering pen color and thickness as you go. You can also flip it into mouse-mode for regular navigation, aided along by a number of gyroscopes and an accelerometer. The kicker is the price, with Penvue costing $700 ($500 for educational institutions) which the makers claim is a fraction of more conventional systems. Is the writing on the wall for interactive whiteboards? Head on past the break for the promo video to find out.

Kixeye Is The Lucrative Dark Horse of Facebook Gaming

willWhile Zynga and other gaming companies seem to be doing everything possible to claw their way off the Facebook canvas, at least one San Francisco company is still in. Big time. With just shy of 5 million monthly active users on Facebook, Kixeye is ranked a dismal 72nd on the developer leaderboard behind Zynga, EA and Angry Birds-maker Rovio, according to tracking service AppData. But the astonishing revenue Kixeye makes per user has the company on track to gross more than $100 million in total revenue this year. That's up from between $25 to $50 million last year, according to an independent source familiar with Kixeye's financials. Kixeye is part of a class of companies that is taking Facebook gaming far from its "Cow Clicker" past. The company doesn't target the stereotypical 35-year-old female demographic that Zynga is well-known for, but rather a subset of hardcore gamers that are willing to pay up. Think fewer virtual potatoes and more epic sea battles.

Roku 2 boxes updated for Francophones and English speakers alike

Roku 2 boxes updated for Francophones and English speakers alike

The latest update for Roku 2 and LT boxes is rolling out to all now, bringing the boxes to v4.6 and reportedly improving system navigation performance "by up to 50 percent". As noticed by Zatz Not Funny when it first started leaking out, this version includes the French language support required by Roku's Canadian launch (that's the channel selection for Canada pictured above) this week, while the official blog notes several other fixes and tweaks that should make launching channels like Netflix and BBC iPlayer a more reliable experience. As usual, it should be pushed to every box over the next couple of days, but you can speed up the process by manually checking for an update. Have an older Roku player? Don't worry, Director of Product Management Tom Markworth closes telling owners to "stay tuned" for future updates coming their way as well.

There's no shortage of apps that let you use your mobile phone as a touchpad for your computer, but Touchpad Free is the first we've heard of that adds explicit support for Windows 8 gestures. The remote pointer app should allow your Mango-powered device to play nice with that preview copy of Win 8 you've been running since it hit the web, complete with the multitouch gestures that are key to navigating the metro interface. To get it up and running you'll have to install a small server app on your PC which you can find at the source. Follow the second source link and you'll come upon Touchpad Free itself. Neat huh? Well, what are you waiting for, go check it out.

Rashad Evans vs. Jon Jones walkout shirts end in a draw

Rashad Evans and Jon Jones have spent a whole lot of time doing interviews, training, filming "Primetime," and doing public appearances heading into UFC 145. They have been busy, so they must not have had much time to spend on their walkout shirts.

If their shirts serve as a predictor of what Saturday night's bout will be like, we are in for a major letdown. Evans' Jaco shirt and Jones' shirt from the UFC are basic and don't even feature the fighter's names. Jones is made of moisture-wicking fabric, so it costs a bit more at $44.95. Evans' shirt features environmentally-friendly ink and costs $19.95.
