Lessons From The Mat | Running With Perseverance

My son is wrapping up his last year of wrestling today, making his second and final appearance in the ?national? championship tournament for his league. Over the years, I have gone from barely being able to watch his matches to being an ardent fan with great respect for the sport.

See Similar Images

The first year my son wrestled, I wasn?t into it at all. I didn?t really enjoy watching the boys, and felt so barbaric cheering them on. As the season wore on, I understood the sport more, could follow the scoring, and figured out why you need to ?lift his head!? when you have your competitor on his back (to force the shoulders on the ground to earn a pin). Still, when the season was over, I looked forward to cheering on the lacrosse team instead.

It took his second year for me to start to enjoy the matches. Well, I still don?t like it when the boys seem to bend their necks more than they should be able to go, or when arms and shoulders get twisted back too far, but for the most part, they wrestle ?clean? without hurting each other.

boys,competitions,leisure,males,men,people,persons,recreation,sports,wrestlers,wrestling,wrestling matches

What I have really come to appreciate is how demanding wrestling is as a sport. Sure, a round may only last for 2 minutes, but you try keeping your shoulders off the ground for even 30 seconds using only your core strength while someone your weight is on top of you using all of his weight to try to push you down. There is also strategy in figuring out how to flip your opponent over without losing control and getting flipped yourself. I see it in the boys? faces as they try a move, reconsider, reset, and try again.

Wrestling offers so many lessons:

  • It ain?t over until it?s over. You can be way ahead in points, but if you get careless, or tired, or the other guy gets lucky, you can find yourself on your back with the referee checking your shoulder blades for a pin. The good news is that this holds true when you are behind. There is always a chance that you can pin your opponent and win as long as you stay in the match and keep trying.

View Details

  • Every second counts. A match can change direction so quickly. The wrestler who initiates a take-down may quickly find himself flat on the mat. The wrestler on the bottom may be able to flip around if his opponent is too high up on his back. Even if you are on your back, if you can keep a shoulder blade off the mat until the clock runs out, you may be able to escape a pin. Sometimes it seems that sheer determination earns the win.

?balances,households,scales,weights

  • The number on the scale doesn?t tell you everything. Each weight class is separated by 5-17 pounds (at the higher weights) and most boys try to be at or near the high end of their weight class. That means that boys in the same weight class should weigh about the same, but they often look very different. There are boys with tall and lanky builds, boys with short and stocky builds, and every build in between. It?s not clear that either build necessarily has an advantage. More often it is skill (and maybe a bit of luck) that determines the winner?I?ve seen boys with different builds dominate their matches.
  • You need to work with what you have. If you are tall and lanky, you need to use that height (and leverage) to your advantage. If you are short and stocky, you need to make that strength and stability work for you. No matter what your size, you can hone your skills and agility so you will be able to respond to your opponent?s strengths.

Another thing I really enjoyed about following my son?s wrestling team was the team ?family.? Parents make an effort to come to the matches and everyone cheers on each wrestler. It is fun to watch the boys grow and mature as the season goes on, and it is great to get to know the other parents as we pass the time between matches during the day-long tournaments.

It is also nice to see the boys come together as a team. While wrestling is a very individual sport, the boys seem to support each other in a way that we don?t see with other sports. It is so heart-warming to see these ?tough guys? giving each?other pep-talks, coaching each other through tough matches, helping each other shake off rough losses, and coming together to celebrate hard-earned victories.

Four years ago I never would have thought that I?d be sad to see my last wrestling tournament, but now wrestling is the first ?last? that I am getting sentimental about as my son finishes his senior year of high school.

Did you play a sport in high school?

Why You Should Consider Green Cleaners For Home Improvement ...

One of the best things you can do to improve things in your home is to keep things clean. Environmentally friendly cleaning techniques, or green cleaning, is the best way to clean your home, especially if you have decided to improve its looks through cleaning. ?Traditional? (also known as chemical based) cleaning products and techniques can do more harm than good-particularly to the people and pets who are living within the walls of the home. Green cleaning methods are good for your home, and this article will point out some valuable tips. Do you still use paper towels when you clean? Stop doing it! Paper towels and the environment don?t go together, and you have heard that for a long time. They also cost you a lot of money. When you have a mess that needs cleaning, try cloth washcloths and see how well they work. You don?t have to buy them all the time like paper towels. You can make them fairly easily using old t-shirts and other clothing that you have cleaned out of your closet. They can get dirty and start to smell after using them for a while, but you can wash them with your regular wash like any other clothing you have. Not only is this a good way to reduce expenses on the household budget, but it will eliminate a lot of trash. Use pure lemon juice to clean vinyl items. This works equally well whether you are wiping down a vinyl piece of furniture (like those old recliners that were mass produced in the 1970s and 1980s) or are using it to mop your vinyl flooring. Remember: most kitchen and bathroom floors are made out of vinyl that has been made to look like tile, linoleum, etc and then rolled across your home?s foundational flooring. To improve the shine and overall appearance of anything vital, use lemon juice. It also removes pesky microbes. It also smells really good! We think that is pretty amazing, and to think that you have barely scratched the surface about gold coast personal trainer. What is also exciting to us is coming to a full realization of how important it is to be fully aware of all the various implications. When you begin to see, we tend to feel you will not only have a greater appreciation for what is going on, but you will be able to use that as leverage. That is why it is so imperative that you really dissect what you are reading here; your awareness will be the better for it. It is natural for us humans to want to have some degree of command over the events and situations in our lives. Some hardwood floor cleaners are pretty harsh, and they don?t need to be. You can make your own out of olive oil and vinegar. You can even smell the mixture without being harmed. The ratio of one ingredient to the other is going to vary depending upon what kind of wood you use in your home. This mixture isn?t just good for floors, because it?s also good for wooden furniture as well. Harsh chemicals don?t need to be used ever again, once you learn which green cleaners work the best. When you spend your time cleaning, it will be more profitable if you do the job the right way. Before you choose any home improvement project, start with a thorough cleaning. When you get in the habit of cleaning your home with green cleaning methods, your whole house will be refreshed, and you will too. The feedback about this is typically along the lines of surprise reactions when people read about window cleaner gold coast, here. Even though the points encompasse a potentially vast scope, there are always details that exist and which you should never overlook. Do pay close attention as you begin to move from one topical area to another. Going beyond what has been talked about here, you may want to pick something that appeals to you or is relevant. Valuable knowledge is there for you if only you have the motivation to look for it. In the end, though, this is clearly your option to pursue or not.

Southern Baptist leaders OK 'Great Commission' (AP)

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

FILE - In this Dec. 7, 2011 file photo, the headquarters of the Southern Baptist Convention is shown in Nashville, Tenn. The nation's largest protestant denomination will definitely remain 'Baptist,' but leaders are thinking about whether it will be 'Southern' for much longer. Southern Baptist Convention President Bryant Wright was expected to present the recommendation of a task force assigned to study a name change to the denomination's executive committee at a meeting Monday night, Feb. 20, 2012. (AP Photo/Mark Humphrey, File)AP - Some Southern Baptists worry that their denomination's name still carries the stigma of a 19th century split with northern Baptists over slavery. Others who fought hard to build the brand and its conservative theology and politics don't want to see it go.

If You Need Home Improvement Advice Then Check Out These Tips ...

When remodeling your home, don?t believe everything a contractor tells you. Even well-respected contractors can turn your original project into one that?s bigger than you anticipated. Problems and issues raised by the contractor should be verified before the homeowner considers spending more money or extending the construction schedule.

Energy efficient light bulbs should be used to replace older bulbs. Switching to energy efficient light bulbs will help to lower your electric bill. You will also save money on bulb replacements because energy efficient bulbs last much longer than regular ones. So swap out those incandescent light bulbs for ones that are more energy efficient.

Most old homes contain carpet throughout the house, but years of experiencing wear and tear leaves a lot of mess. You get a classic look with wooden floors, they?ll last longer then most plush carpets, as well.

If you decide to go with a contractor for your home improvement plans, always pick the contractor with the best reputation, rather than the cheapest one. Low bids from a contractor who does not have a good reputation often lead to poor workmanship. Soon after, you may discover that the work is not holding its value. In addition to repair costs, a poorly done project can also create a dangerous environment in your home. Choose a trustworthy contractor.

When working on a home project that involves heavy lifting, having the proper safety equipment is important. You always should procure a harness for your back if you are lifting heavy things, and also a helmet to protect you from falling objects.

One improvement that can make your life easier is replacing ordinary paneling in areas with many pipes with waterproof paneling. This ?green board?, as it is commonly referred to, will stand up well to moisture, and prevent mold growth so it is ideally suited for these types of areas.

Consider the good and the bad of an alarm system on your home during showings. If the neighborhood is unsafe, and you are no longer living at the home, an alarm may be needed.

You can use steel wool to barricade any areas where you believe rodents may be hiding. This will prevent the mice from coming in because they cannot chew through steel wool like they can chew through other materials.

Any home improvement you make should make sense in terms of your house?s location. To give a specific example, it makes more sense to install central air instead of fireplaces in a hot climate. Also having a swimming pool is a great if you live around this area, but it may not be such a good idea if you live in Northern United States.

Only consider contractors for your home improvement projects that have proper licensing from your state of residence. You can do this through your state government website, or via phone. Unlicensed contractors can be scam artists or they could have done something wrong to have their license revoked.

If you follow these tips, you can make your home look great. Now take these tips, and turn your home into something special.

New Livingston Parish Flood Maps to Go Into Effect | Insurance

NEW ORLEANS, La., Feb. 16 ? The U.S. Department of Homeland Security?sFederal Emergency Management Agency issued the following news release:

Livingston Parish property owners without flood insurance are encouraged to buy coverage now to get the best possible premiums before new flood insurance rate maps go into effect on April 3, 2012.

The latest flood hazard maps, known as Flood Insurance Rate Maps, delineate new flood-risk zones and serve as an integral part of the National Flood Insurance Plan (NFIP), which plays a key role in defense against flood losses. Property owners need to know that this could mean a change in their floodplain status.

?We encourage residents to look at the flood maps now and to be familiar with the latest risks of potential flooding in their area,? said Andre Cadogan, Federal Emergency Management Agency?s Louisiana Recovery Office deputy director of programs. ?The maps can help residents make informed decisions about protecting their property.?

The FIRMs were developed as part of the nationwide map modernization effort spearheaded by FEMA, which administers the NFIP. Once officially adopted by Livingston Parish and the communities within the parish, the FIRMS will replace the current effective maps, which are outdated and produced using earlier technology.

Homeowners who purchase flood insurance prior to April 3, 2012, may be able to grandfather the current flood zone designation saving money on flood insurance. Current policy holders and those planning to purchase NFIP protection are strongly encouraged to contact their insurance agent or company to ensure that they have adequate coverage and that policies account for new flood risk data.

Individuals may also consult with their local Livingston Parish floodplain administrator at (225) 686-3021 or (800)730-3029 with questions on which flood map or elevations to use going forward when rebuilding. To view maps, please visit www.msc.fema.gov.

Leah Tysse didn?t have any formal musical training.

Whitney Houston was her ?teacher.?

?Whitney is the reason I wanted to sing,? said Tysse, a dynamic, Berkeley-based soul-pop vocalist. ?I was a huge fan. Her voice was just impeccable.?

When: Tonight, following the Stockton Thunder game

Where: King?s Room, Stockton Arena

Admission: $10

Information: (209) 373-1400

Tysse was weaned on Houston?s self-titled 1985 debut album ? and its three No. 1 singles ? while growing up in Maine and New Jersey.

?That really is what made me wanna sing,? said Tysse, who, like Houston, developed her powerful voice in church choirs. ?I never had any vocal training. Just Whitney.?

Tysse, a member of San Francisco?s Glide Memorial Church Choir, will perform in more secular surroundings tonight ? the King?s Room at Stockton Arena following the Thunder?s ice-hockey game.

Stockton bassist AJ Joyce plays part-time in Tysse?s band, but he?ll be there tonight.

Tysse, 36, introduces songs from ?Love Again,? her less-bluesy second album released on Nov. 29. Houston, who died on Feb. 11 at age 48, will be on her mind.

?Well, I have mixed emotions,? Tysse said of Houston, whose funeral is being held Saturday in Newark, N.J. ?Given what we know, nobody was that surprised. But it was so tragic the way her life went. Her talent was unparalleled. She could have continued so much further.?

Tysse?s taking a sightly different angle with her music, edging away from straight-up blues into a more pop-oriented mode.

She?s been working on the 13-track ?Love Again? since 2009, using lyrics written ?years and years ago.?

Tysse ?really belts out? some songs. Others are more subdued ballads: ?Some of them had been written five, six, 10 years ago and shelved. I just pulled ?em out. When we started, I didn?t expect it to come out like it has. The songwriting hadn?t fully developed.?

Those songs are mostly about ?one particularly bad time,? she said. ?A bad ending to a relationship. I got a lot of songs out of it. The whole album really kind of focuses on that. It?s about love and the heart, though. It?s not all ?woe is me.?

?My first album (?Real Good Fire,? 2007) was a little more blues-focused. This one?s a little less genre-specific. More funky. RB. Really, no blues.

?I?ve created something new that?s my own. Maybe not what the blues world expected it to be. What I created is something altogether new.?

Mike Blankenship, her band?s keyboard player, helped with that. A lot.

?We have a good working relationship,? she said of the Concord-based Blankenship. ?There are elements of RB. Also elements of, I?d call it pop, for lack of a better genre.?

While it?s not quite at the level of Adele?s Grammy Award-winning ?Someone Like You,? Tysse?s ?I Do,? a ballad, ?seems to get the most reaction,? she said. ?It was the most challenging to write, but it came out best. Everyone sort of has a song they like best. Like when they come up to me and start singing my songs to me.

?I?m not engaged or married. People ask, ?Who is it about?? It happens to not be about anyone. I didn?t really force the lyrics. It just came at one time. I don?t know why.?

She grew up singing in the United Methodist Church and has increased her vocal power and flexibility at Glide Memorial for 14 years.

?I love all types of music,? she said. ?From Joni Mitchell to Tupac. I just love good songs. I don?t wanna be stuck in any box. Ever. I?ll always love the blues.?

Born into a ?modest background? in Madison, Wis., she took piano lessons and taught herself to play trumpet at 7. An only child, she added vocals after she and her mom, Dorothy Breen, moved to Orono, Maine, following her parents? divorce.

Tysse also was a competitive swimmer, 100- and 300-meter hurdler and soccer player.

Her father, Paul, a grant writer at the University of Wisconsin, accompanied her on acoustic guitar ? folk and jazz tunes ? and further developed her skills with her grandmother in Ocean Grove, N.J.

She spent a year in Grenoble, France, where she sang in clubs. She attended the University of Vermont and lived in Boston for nine months before arriving in San Francisco.

?Love Again? is more than an album title. It?s also a form of ?giving back.?

Through the Love Again Project, Tysse donates income from some shows to charitable organizations ? ranging from the Humane Society of the Sierra Foothills to Glide Memorial Church, which benefits when Tysse formally releases ?Love Again? on Feb. 26 at Yoshi?s in San Francisco.

?I always wanted to somehow connect with giving back,? said Tysse, whose mother, a psychologist at the University of Maine, has been a do-good inspiration. ?I?m not able to contribute that much. I?m not Bonnie Raitt.

?I just hope by connecting I can at least give some exposure to these causes. It helps give meaning personally to what I?m doing. It?s so fulfilling. It?s such a blessing. Sometimes I just feel spoiled. Not that it?s easy, but it?s not like other people making a bazillion dollars will do something.?

Houston?s contribution was inspiration: ?She was the one.?

For Houston mourners, a dearth of places to grieve

Houston's funeral will be held Saturday in the church where she first showcased her singing talents as a child, her family choosing to remember her in a private service rather than in a large event at an arena. Officials had discussed the possibility of holding a memorial at the Prudential Center, a major sports and entertainment venue that can seat about 18,000 people, but the funeral home said it had been ruled out. Whigham said funeral services for the late singer are set for Feb. 18 at New Hope Baptist Church. Houston, who ruled as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, died Feb. 11. She was 48. (AP Photo/Julio Cortez)

(AP) ? In Whitney Houston's hometown, her family plans a private church service, with no public memorial set. In Los Angeles, where she died, there's not even a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for fans to pile flowers. So for the legion of music lovers mourning a global superstar, where do broken hearts go?

Fans who have gathered outside the church where Houston will be eulogized Saturday at an invitation-only service ? and outside the funeral home where her body now rests ? say they understand why the family wants to keep the world out the best they can. But they also yearned for the chance to fully share in the grief and the remembrance of a native daughter who made it big and made them proud.

Samuel Turner Jackson, of Newark, said he was looking forward to heading down to "The Rock," as the Prudential Center is known. Before, that is, the funeral home announced Tuesday that no public service would be held at the 18,000-seat arena, an option that had been discussed.

The arena, home to home to the NHL's New Jersey Devils, displayed an image of Houston on a screen outside Tuesday.

"We don't know what the circumstances are, but we're sure that the family did want to share something with the community that she gave so much to," he said. "But they have their reasons, and we're going to do the best we can to pay our respects and to mourn her."

Antonio Ballinger, of Newark, also hoped to attend a public service and "see her off," and said he was saddened to hear he wouldn't get the opportunity.

"But my blessings go out to the family, and I wish them nothing but the best," he said.

The family said Tuesday it had no plans right now for a public memorial. Still, fans in this downtrodden city held out hope.

"Maybe at some point down the road, they might do something," said B.J. Frazier, of East Orange. "It's like they're saying today, they shared her for a long time and they just want her to themselves for now."

Houston, a sensation from her first, eponymous album in 1985, was one of the world's best-selling artists from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, turning out such hits as "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," ''How Will I Know," ''The Greatest Love of All" and "I Will Always Love You." But as she struggled with drugs, her majestic voice became raspy, and she couldn't hit the high notes.

Houston, 48, died Feb. 11 at a hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., just hours before she was set to perform at producer Clive Davis' pre-Grammy Awards bash. Officials say she was underwater and apparently unconscious when she was pulled from a bathtub.

Authorities Sunday said an autopsy found no indications of foul play or obvious signs of trauma on Houston. It could be weeks, however, before the coroner's office completes toxicology tests to establish the cause of death.

Houston was born in Newark and was raised in nearby East Orange. She began singing as a child at New Hope Baptist Church, where her mother, Grammy-winning gospel singer Cissy Houston, led the music program for many years. Her cousin, future pop star Dionne Warwick, also sang in its choir.

The family decided that, after sharing Whitney with the city, state and world for more than 30 years, "this is their time now for their farewell," said funeral home owner Carolyn Whigham.

"The family thanks all the fans, the friends and the media, but this time is their private time," she said.

The hearse that carried Houston's body from an airport to the Whigham Funeral Home came into Newark under the cloak of darkness, in the middle of the night, denying local folks another opportunity to grieve publicly.

Police met with church officials Tuesday to discuss logistics and how to handle the large crowds expected to gather Saturday in the streets outside the New Hope Baptist Church, about a mile from the funeral home.

In Newark, perennially ranked among the nation's poorest and most dangerous cities, a public memorial at taxpayer expense is a tricky proposition. New Jersey's largest city, at more than 270,000 residents, laid off more than 160 police officers in November. The dismal school system is relying on a large grant from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for salvation.

And whether the megastar's estate would pick up any slack for a memorial is up for debate. The singer failed to fulfill a $100 million recording deal in 2001 that reportedly called for six records. Since then, only four have come out, including a greatest hits collection that was not released in the United States. She lost two homes to foreclosure several years ago.

Newark's quandary is similar to the decisions Los Angeles had to make when Michael Jackson, another pop superstar brought down before his time, died in 2009. A public memorial at the Staples Center, a professional sports arena, cost taxpayers about $3 million but pumped a million more than that into the local economy through hotel stays, restaurants and other businesses, according to a city report.

In Los Angeles, it has become a tradition that whenever a major celebrity dies, fans lay flowers and other gestures of sorrow and tribute on the deceased's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Houston had no star, leaving Angelenos with nowhere in particular to express their grief.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which manages the Walk of Fame, explained that Houston was selected for a star in 1995, but a date was never requested by the singer's representatives for an unveiling ceremony. That selection expired in 2000, it said, but can be reconsidered if desired by the family.

Gospel singer Marvin Winans, a Grammy Award winner and longtime family friend, has been chosen to give the eulogy in Newark, his son, Marvin Jr., and Winans' office at Perfecting Faith Church in Detroit told The Associated Press.

Winans, in his role as a pastor, married Houston and fellow singer Bobby Brown in 1992; the couple later divorced. The Winans and Houston families have been friends for years, and Houston performed with Winans' siblings CeCe and BeBe, members of one of gospel music's most prominent families.

Houston was especially close to CeCe and BeBe Winans and performed with both. She and CeCe Winans sang "Count on Me," for the movie "Waiting to Exhale," in which Houston starred.

In a show of support for the local community and in lieu of flowers, Houston's family asked Tuesday that any donations in her memory be sent to the Whitney Houston Academy of Creative and Performing Arts, a public school in East Orange serving students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Houston attended the school as a girl, when it was named the Franklin School, and regularly visited for many years afterward. On Monday, students held an outdoor service in her memory.

Houston left behind one child, daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown, 18, from her marriage to Brown.

Gov. Chris Christie ordered flags flown at half-staff Saturday at state government buildings, describing Houston as a "cultural icon" who belongs in the same category of New Jersey music history as Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Bruce Springsteen.

"Her accomplishments were a great source of pride for the people of the state," he said.

Foo Fighters, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne Recognize EDM At Grammys

David Guetta and Deadmau5 were also part of an all-star performance that paid tribute to EDM Sunday night.

EDM's road to the mainstream limelight hit a high on Sunday (February 12) when David Guetta, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Deadmau5 and, most surprisingly, the Foo Fighters joined together at the 54th Grammy Awards to pay tribute to electronic music.

Introduced by host LL Cool J, Chris Brown made his way through a sea of audience members, donning his best Run DMC gear. Leaving the dancing to the crowd, Breezy crooned to the tune of his David Guetta collaboration "I Can Only Imagine" as the DJ/producer jumped behind his turntables set. But the star power didn't stop there: Lil Wayne appeared shortly after to spit his verse of the duet amid the flashing neon backdrop and jumping fans.

Once the song ended, smoke filled the air and the other side of the stage lit up to reveal the Foo Fighters. As they previously revealed to MTV News, the rock group left the dancing to the pros and stuck to what they're good at: rocking out. Marking their second performance of the night, the band performed their single "Rope," before transitioning into Deadmau5's glow-in-the-dark light set.

At the time of the performance, the Foos had already nabbed four awards, including Best Rock Song, Best Rock Album, Best Hard/Rock Metal Performance and Best Long Form Music Video. MTV News recently caught up with frontman Dave Grohl, who confessed that there isn't much of a gap between the Foos' rock and the electronic genre.

Video: Watch Highlights From The 2012 Grammy Awards

"Well, Deadmau5 is maybe the only EDM artist I know because we did a bunch of festivals over the summer, and for whatever reason, he would be headlining over there while we were headlining over here," Grohl said. "I guess people thought that our audiences would split, but our audiences are compatible in a way, because what he does ... rocks."

Pakistan's PM charged with contempt

Pakistan's Supreme Court charged the prime minister with contempt on Monday for defying its orders to reopen a corruption case against his political ally, President Asif Ali Zardari, sharpening a political crisis that has gripped the country.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that if he was convicted he would be forced to step down. He could also face up to six months in jail.

However, the case ? which has raised tension between Pakistan's civilian leaders and the Supreme Court ? is expected to drag on and paralyze decision-making.

On Monday, Gilani drove to the court himself, accompanied by his lawyer, amid tight security. Helicopters buzzed over a rainy and overcast Islamabad, and hundreds of police blocked roads leading to the court building in the capital.

Gilani said he understood the charges after they were read out and pledged to contest them.

Kickbacks alleged
The move was the formal start to a process that will now take weeks or months to conclude. The next session will be on Feb. 22.

The case against Zardari relates to kickbacks he and his late wife, former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, allegedly received from Swiss companies when Bhutto was in power in the 1990s. They were found guilty in absentia in a Swiss court in 2003.

Millions pushed into child labor in Pakistan

Zardari appealed, but Swiss prosecutors dropped the case after the Pakistani parliament passed an ordinance giving the president and others immunity from old corruption cases that many agreed were politically motivated.

The bill was decried by many in Pakistan, who saw it as an attempt to subvert the law. The Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional in 2009, and also ordered the government to write a letter to Swiss authorities requesting they reopen the case. The government has refused, saying the president enjoys immunity from prosecution while in office.

Personal vendetta?
Court supporters say the judges are upholding the rule of law. But government loyalists accuse the chief justice of pursuing a personal vendetta against the president, or of acting on behalf of the army to topple the government.

Analysts say Gilani seems willing to sacrifice himself and go to jail for the benefit of his party. But no matter how it ends, the case has distracted the government from dealing with the country's ailing economy and a violent Islamist insurgency.

"The prime minister's actions reek of protecting the president over our system of democracy," the Express Tribune newspaper said in an editorial.

"Even if the president's immunity is upheld, it will no longer be applicable once he is out of office and in that eventuality there may be no legal or constitutional hitch in preventing the Supreme Court from going ahead on this issue."

Slideshow: Pakistan: A nation in turmoil (on this page)

That is the view held by many other commentators, who hail the Supreme Court's actions as a badly needed advance for the rule of law and accountability in Pakistan, where corruption tops the list of opinion polls as the country's biggest problem.

The political turmoil has been a problem for the United States as well, because it wants Pakistan to focus on repairing troubled relations between the two countries and help negotiate peace with the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The twisty road to US-Pakistan re-engagement

"The case has been very destabilizing because it has increased uncertainty, and the government is always worried about its survival," said Pakistani political analyst Hasan-Askari Rizvi. "A government whose performance is poor has become poorer."

Others say the Supreme Court's pursuit of Zardari and his Pakistan People's Party (PPP) is bad for democracy and strengthens the hand of the powerful military, which has staged three coups since 1947 and ruled the country for more than half of its history.

"At one level, this serves the army's purposes," said Najim Sethi, editor of the weekly Friday Times. "They want the politicians to fight amongst themselves and remain discredited."

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Battling The Bottle: Students And Industry Face Off Over Water

Bottled water is trickling away from college campuses nationwide, thanks to the efforts of student activists and the non-profit groups that support them with campaigns like Ban the Bottle.

But that's not going over too well with the International Bottled Water Association. The industry, which had $10.6 billion in revenue in 2010, went on the defensive this month with a YouTube video to counter what it calls "misinformation" used to turn college students against bottled water.

Corporate Accountability International, which created the Think Outside the Bottle campaign that has been used on some campuses, says more than twenty schools have complete or partial bans on bottled water because of environmental and health concerns about the industry. Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., and California's Humboldt State University imposed campus-wide bans in September, and the University of Vermont announced last month it will end its contract with Dasani bottler Coca-Cola in July.

International Bottled Water Association/YouTube

The bottled water industry wants college students to see its side of the bottled water issue. But student activists have their own take.

In addition to removing bottled water from vending machines, stores and cafeterias, students have pushed for reusable bottle hand-outs, water fountains, and filling stations. "We're really trying to make it part of the student culture to carry a water bottle," says Clare Pillsbury, a Macalester senior who led her campus's effort.

But the IBWA video suggests the cause is unworthy of students' energy ? instead, perhaps they could focus on genocide in Darfur. It claims bottled water is a good alternative to sugary beverages and easier to recycle than other packaged drinks. The IBWA also argues bottled water is safer than tap water.

The students ? and a lot of water experts and authors ? disagree with most of these points. They say the bottles add up to a lot of waste, and that the companies have privatized something that should essentially be free.

So, what's the take-away?

IBWA president Joe Doss always circles around to freedom of choice. "It's not a tap water versus bottled water issue," he says; the industry just wants students to have the option.

And they do, the activists say ? they just have to go off-campus.

The bottled water war is spreading beyond campuses, though. Several cities have stopped using public funds to purchase bottled water, and Grand Canyon National Park announced Monday it will stop selling water in containers smaller than one gallon.

Doss estimates his industry grew by five percent in 2011, so for now the freedom of choice looks safe. But that could change, if activists continue to get their way.

"The fact is, you could eliminate bottled water," Pillsbury says. "These companies are creating a product that we don't need."
