GM offers big discounts to boost Volt sales

DETROIT (AP) ? General Motors rolled out the Chevrolet Volt two years ago with lofty sales goals and the promise of a new technology that someday would help end America's dependence on oil.

So it seemed like a good thing in August when sales of the $40,000 car set a monthly record of 2,800. But a closer look shows that things aren't what they seem for the cutting-edge car.

Sales rose mostly because of discounts of almost $10,000, or 25 percent of the Volt's sticker price, according to figures from TrueCar.com, an auto pricing website. Other pricing services gave similar numbers, and dealers confirmed that steeply discounted Volts are selling better than a few months ago.

GM's discounts on the Volt are more than four times the industry's per-vehicle average, according to TrueCar estimates. Edmunds.com and J.D. Power and Associates say they're about three times the average. Discounts include low-interest financing, cash discounts to buyers, sales bonuses to dealers, and subsidized leases.

Americans have been slow to embrace electric cars. But the Volt's August sales show they're willing to buy if prices are low enough. Even so, electrics have a long way to go before they enter the mainstream and make money for car companies. Electrics and gas-electric hybrids account for just 3.5 percent of U.S. auto sales this year. GM is losing thousands of dollars on every Volt, raising the question of how long it can keep eating the steep losses.

For the foreseeable future, carmakers will have to cut prices to move electric vehicles off dealer lots. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office says the cost of electric cars must drop to be competitive with gasoline-powered ones.

GM executives have conceded from the start that they were losing money on the Volt, and that was before the big discounts.

Now the losses could be even higher. It costs $60,000 to $75,000 to build a Volt, including development, manufacturing and raw materials, estimates Sandy Munro, president of Munro & Associates, a Troy, Mich., a company that analyzes vehicle production expenses for automakers. Much of the cost comes from an expensive combination of two power systems ? electric and gasoline. With a sticker price of $40,000, minus the $10,000 the company pays in incentives, GM gets roughly $30,000 for every Volt. So it could be losing at least $30,000 per car.

"It certainly wasn't a rousing success," Carter Driscoll, senior analyst for CapStone Investments who follows electric cars, says of the Volt.

GM confirmed there are incentives on the Volt and that the company loses money on the car. But the automaker declined to give figures for the discounts or the losses. The figures exclude a federal tax credit that goes to buyers.

The automaker says Munro's estimate is high because it doesn't spread the Volt's costs far enough into the future, when more Volts will be sold. Automakers typically spend $1 billion or more to develop a car, and sometimes don't recoup the investment and start making money until late in its life. Also, Volt technology will be used in future cars and trucks, eventually leading to profits, the company says.

GM spokesman Jim Cain says most of the Volt discounts come in the form of lease deals, which account for about two-thirds of sales. In some markets, Volts can be leased for $249 per month with $2,400 down.

"We're trying to create a market for a brand-new technology," Cain says.

NO SPARK AT THE START

The Volt, a four-seat compact, was rolled out in a few states in December 2010 with a starting price of $41,000.

GM had high hopes. The car's features stacked up well against the Nissan Leaf, a pure electric car that debuted about the same time and is the Volt's closest competitor. The Volt goes about 35 miles on battery power, then a gasoline-powered generator can take over, giving it the same range as a car with a gasoline engine. And the battery can be recharged in 10 hours from a standard home electrical outlet for about $1.50.

But the timing of the launch was poor. The pricey car hit showrooms when many buyers were reeling from the bad economy and turned off by the government's $50 billion bailout of GM.

"Let's face it, over $40,000 is asking a lot for a compact car," says Bob Lutz, a retired GM vice chairman who led the development of the Volt.

Even a $7,500 federal tax credit, which dropped the Volt's sticker price to $33,500, did little to promote sales. The car cost $7,000 more than the Leaf, and $13,000 above a well-equipped compact with a gas engine.

As it reached more dealers in 2011, the Volt had to overcome more than a high price and recession-weary Americans. The government found that the battery could catch fire after crash tests. In California, a key market because of its tech-savvy population, another roadblock emerged. Volt drivers traveling alone weren't allowed to use carpool lanes because the car didn't qualify for a state exemption. Drivers of the Toyota Prius hybrid, meanwhile, could use those lanes, thanks to the exemption for lower-polluting vehicles.

U.S. Volt sales totaled just 7,700 in 2011, short of GM's goal of 10,000 and a fraction of the 136,000 for the Prius hybrid, the world's best-selling alternative fuel vehicle. Volt sales have climbed to more than 13,000 this year. But at their current pace, sales will still miss the company's 2012 target of 60,000 worldwide.

MOVING THE NEEDLE

Faced with disappointing sales, GM began toying with discounts. In June of 2011, the company knocked $1,000 off the Volt's starting price, but it didn't help. So early this year, GM started offering many more discounts, which soared to $10,000 per car in August.

The Volt is now the top-selling electric car in the U.S. ? 7,400 ahead of the Prius Plug-in. Nissan's Leaf is a distant third, and analysts say Volt sales could reach 20,000 this year.

Spikes in gas prices also have helped sales, especially when incentives rise at the same time. The national average price of gasoline rose at least 24 cents a gallon in March and August. Those were the Volt's two best sales months.

Other changes have helped boost the car's appeal. Engineers figured out that the Volt fires were the result of a coolant leak that caused electrical shorts after side-impact crash tests. GM retrofitted the car with more steel to protect the battery. No fires were ever reported on real-world roads.

The carpool problem, which had cost sales on the West Coast, also was resolved. California has 1,500 miles of freeway lanes that can be used only by cars carrying two or more people. But there are exceptions allowing lower-pollution vehicles with one person. Initially, the Volt didn't qualify because its gasoline-powered generator didn't meet the pollution standards.

But engineers eventually cut the generator's pollution, and the Volt won an exception in late February, immediately boosting sales in a state where one-quarter of all Volts, or about 3,400, were sold this year.

Before the cheap leases and the carpool exemption, Bunnin Chevrolet in Culver City, Calif., was selling three to five Volts per month. The dealership sold 36 last month, mostly leases, and it is struggling to keep Volts in stock, says sales manager Chad Kelman.

"It definitely helps to discount," Kelman says. "The market in L.A. is fiercely competitive."

Gas in Los Angeles, which now runs more than $4 per gallon, was the big reason that Donald Keller traded in his 2007 Lexus ES350 for a 2012 Volt in July. But he might not have bought it without $5,000 in discounts from Bunnin Chevy.

Keller, 82, who volunteers to take senior citizens to the grocery store and medical appointments, says he's driven more than 1,100 miles in his Volt, and hasn't bought any gasoline. Charging the car has boosted his electric bill by about $40 per month, but he used to spend $200 a month on gas for the Lexus.

"I don't go to the (gas) station and I don't have to worry about the price," he says.

AIMING FOR THE MAINSTREAM

While the Volt isn't helping GM's bottom line, it's not in danger of being canceled anytime soon.

GM can subsidize the Volt's cost from profits on other cars, says CapStone's Driscoll. But eventually GM will have to get closer to breakeven or make money, he says. GM earned almost $2.5 billion overall in the first half of this year.

Discounting the price should help Volt sales expand beyond early adopters, says Michael Lew, an energy efficiency analyst for the Needham & Co. investment firm. That's important because if sales increase, GM will have more negotiating power with parts suppliers to cut costs and stanch losses, he says.

GM says that the Volt has helped the company, even if it never makes a dime. The car has pulled in customers from rival brands, and helped Chevy wrestle at least part of the environmental halo from Toyota's Prius, executives say. It also will help GM meet tough government fuel economy standards.

GM's Cain says the company wants all cars and trucks to be profitable, but some take longer than others.

"Its prime purpose was to introduce a new generation of technology," says Lutz, the former vice chairman. "And at the same time ... demonstrate to the world that GM is way more technologically capable than the people give it credit for."

Home Improvement Jobs Have One Number One Priority ? Safety ...

Perhaps the most important part of any significant home improvement job is the preparation you put into it. Even if your job has to be completed in record time, take the time to make a detailed plan of action. This will save time and make the job go easier in the long run. When the work you want to accomplish is a type of work you have never done before, then it is especially important that you prepare in advance and have a solid plan of action. The internet is a great source of data on just about any subject you can imagine. You will be able to find everything you need for your project online and comprehensive directions on how to do the work. It?s not hard to find expert advice on the internet. Just do a search and you will discover detailed directions for your project as well as lists of all the supplies, equipment, and parts you might need. This information online is even a good review for someone who already has some experience in the project they are planning.

Some people love their tools and consider them essential to running a smooth home. Don?t underestimate their importance for your household tasks. Don?t practice ?false economy? by buying cheap tools. They will only cause you problems and will have to be replaced frequently. Their cost, down the road, could even be more than a good tool would cost at the outset. There are several reasons for buying quality tools and one of the most important is to avoid having to constantly replace a tool because it keeps breaking. Always take the necessary steps to care for your tools, and just one very useful step concerns moisture. If you let your tools stay dirty or damp, they can rust or just get mucked up with greasy dirt. It?s also a good idea to keep a tin of a light-weight viscosity oil handy and wipe your tools down with an oil rag before you put them away. A lot of people keep such a rag in their tool box in a plastic bag. When you are ready to use them, simply wipe the oil off and proceed.

There is so much for you to discover about home improvement, and we certainly can help you in this area. Take a look at what is occurring on your end, and that may help you to perfect what you need. There are probably more than a few particulars you have to pay close attention to on your side. How each one will play out in your circumstances is largely unknown, but we each have to think about that. The rest of this article will provide you with a few more very hot tips about this.

Taking care of rags that you may have lying around on your floor or work area may not be very safe unless stored correctly. The concept of fire loading is a little known but very important safety consideration. The more flammable material you have in one spot, the greater the fire load. Don?t forget to always store any rags or material with flammable solvents for your protection. It is best to put these in a container that is airtight.

Since they involve people who don?t know much, accidents involving electricity are understandable. Certainly, there are plenty of things that are actually common sense, but that doesn?t help much after the fact. Thus, whenever you are doing something to an appliance, simply unplug it. Always unplug the power cord if you are going to tinker with it in any way. Always unplug the unit if you want to change something, like a bit or a saw. We think the reasons for doing so are obvious, but you would be surprised at the accidents that happen. So, when working with power tools, take it slowly and be cautious.

Most injuries occur because people refuse to implement the proper safety precautions first. Most people simply do not have a mindset that is conducive toward safety.

Mosquito virus could lead to new vaccines and drugs

Friday, September 21, 2012

A mosquito sample collected three decades ago in Israel's Negev Desert has yielded an unexpected discovery: a previously unknown virus that's closely related to some of the world's most dangerous mosquito-borne pathogens but, curiously, incapable of infecting non-insect hosts.

Researchers believe this attribute could make the Eilat virus a uniquely useful tool for studying other alphaviruses, a genus of largely mosquito-borne pathogens that includes the viruses responsible for chikungunya, Venezuelan equine encephalitis, western equine encephalitis and eastern equine encephalitis. In addition, the researchers say, Eilat could also aid in the development of new alphavirus vaccines, therapies and diagnostic techniques.

"This virus is unique ? it's related to all of these mosquito-borne viruses that cause disease and cycle between mosquitoes and animals, and yet it is incapable of infecting vertebrate cells," said University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston graduate student Farooq Nasar, lead author of a paper on the virus now online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "It's a gift, really, because we can compare it to other alphaviruses and figure out the basis of their ability to infect a variety of animals, including humans."

Eilat was discovered in a virus sample that Joseph Peleg of Hebrew University sent to UTMB's Dr. Robert Tesh, an author of the PNAS paper and director of the World Reference Center for Emerging Viruses and Arboviruses. The collection holds over 5,000 identified viruses and dozens of unidentified samples like the one contributed by Peleg.

All the researchers knew about Peleg's specimen was that it killed insect cells while leaving animal cells untouched, a very unusual behavior. So they sent it to a lab at Columbia University that specializes in doing highly intensive searches for the genetic material of viruses, a process called "deep sequencing." As it turned out, there were two new viruses in the sample. One virus killed insect cells, and the other ? Eilat virus ? infected them without doing any harm.

"We were extraordinarily lucky to have that other virus in our sample, because without the cell death it caused, we never would have done the work that led us to Eilat," Nasar said. "Essentially, we found it by accident."

Eilat's inability to grow in animal cells ? even its genetic material cannot replicate in them ? makes it unique among alphaviruses, and it also makes it likely that the virus could be uniquely valuable to researchers who study alphaviruses and work to protect humans and domestic animals from them. For example, the UTMB researchers say, Eilat could be transformed into a vaccine against one of its dangerous relatives by making changes to the genes that produce its envelope proteins, which are exposed on virus particle surfaces and stimulate the critical parts of the immune response.

"We have taken the genes for the envelope proteins of very dangerous viruses like eastern equine encephalitis and used them to replace the genes for Eilat's structural proteins," Nasar said. "That gives us viruses that we can grow in insect cells that can't do anything in vertebrate cells at all, but still produce immunity against eastern equine encephalitis ?they can be used to vaccinate animals, and hopefully someday people."

A variety of Eilat-based "chimeric viruses" ? viruses made by combining genetic material from other viruses ? could be used to study the interactions between host cells and dangerous alphaviruses, leading to the development of antiviral drugs. The viruses could also serve as the basis for new diagnostic tools that could be deployed in an alphavirus outbreak. Because these chimeras, like Eilat, would not be able to infect vertebrates, such research could be done without the elaborate and often cumbersome containment precautions needed for working with pathogens like chikungunya, Venezuelan equine encephalitis, or eastern and western equine encephalitis.

Helpful Advice For Those Facing Personal Bankruptcy | Siben ...

TIP! Think about opening a few new credit lines for the purpose of rebuilding credit following bankruptcy. While this is not an easy path to take, a secured credit card is a good place to start.

Are you in debt? Do you think that there is no way to get out of your debt except to file for bankruptcy? There is a lot of helpful advice on the Internet that will show you how to avoid this terrible bankruptcy situation. Peruse this article and pick up some tips on how to prevent a financial catastrophe that causes you to go bankrupt.

TIP! Realize that bankruptcy, ultimately, might be better for your credit than continuing to make late payments or miss payments on your debt. Bankruptcies can remain on your credit reports for 10 years, you can jump right into repairing your credit.

Take on a second job to increase your income. You do not have to file for bankruptcy, there is still hope that you can dig yourself out of financial debt so consider the alternative. They ought to work with you and then you won?t even need to file.

TIP! Before you file for bankruptcy, look at your situation carefully. Review your situation and see how many of your debts you can have discharged.

Consider all of your options before filing for bankruptcy. Credit counseling is an important option for you to pursue. Various non-profit companies are out there to give you assistance. These organizations can work with creditors to lower your payments and interest rates. Payments are then made to the creditor via the counseling service.

TIP! Understand the rights you have as a bankruptcy filer. It is not unusual for creditors to claim that their debt is not able to be discharged.

If you have made a mistake and your case is dismissed due to your error, you can usually re-file. However, in most cases you will only have the benefit of the automatic stay for 30 days after you file if your case was already dismissed once. If you need more than the allotted 30 days you should ask the judge for an extension if you have good cause.

TIP! Be sure you?re acting when the time is right. The timing of your filing could be important to its success.

A lot of people believe that having a bankruptcy on their credit reports will make it impossible for them to get a loan for years. Although it could be true for some people, it is possible to obtain a better credit score than what you had before you filed. You must be sure to stay on time with payments after filing, to reestablish a positive credit score again.

TIP! Carefully choose which bankruptcy is best for you. You may have more than one bankruptcy option available to you.

Some attorneys may offer to contact creditors in regard to any delinquent accounts in your name. When a debt collector calls the number, they will be able to obtain verification that your personal debt is in the process of bankruptcy filing. This should keep the collector from calling you again.

TIP! It is important to file bankruptcy before its too late. It is a big mistake to avoid financial problems, thinking they may go away on their own.

Be sure your home is well protected. Filing for bankruptcy will not always result in losing your home. If your home has significantly depreciated in value or you?ve taken a second mortgage, it may be possible to retain possession of your home. You are still going to want to check into homestead exemption either way just in case.

TIP! Consider all options before filing for bankruptcy. Some alternatives to filing for personal bankruptcy include debt repayment plans, interest rate reduction plans, and debt consolidation.

Do not hesitate or stall when determining if filing for bankruptcy is the correct choice for your life and situation. It is absolutely difficult to admit you require help. On the other hand, the longer you delay, the more debt you rack up. A qualified bankruptcy lawyer can give you advice about filing for bankruptcy and help you weigh other options.

TIP! If you cannot use the Homestead Exemption within the Chapter 7 bankruptcy laws, find out if you can file a Chapter 13 bankruptcy with your mortgage. Some scenarios will require a conversion from Chapter 7 to Chapter 13, dependent on what your attorney says.

Research the situation first. If you are going to file personal bankruptcy and can?t afford a lawyer, you may be tempted to do-it-yourself. If you decide to do this, it is important that you are knowledgeable on the subject. There are many errors that you could make that would prevent a discharge. Remember to do all things correctly so this would not happen.

TIP! Once your initial filing is complete, it is time to take some time to relax a little. Bankruptcy is a stressful process: you will have to go over your bad financial decisions and perhaps feel ashamed about your decision.

Planning properly can help you get on the right track. If it?s possible to get some more time to pay your bills, take it. Do your best in taking proper steps to avoid bankruptcy. Now is the time to begin making plans for the future

U.S. shares end flat as Spain factor fades; oil up

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks and the euro ended a week of slight moves with limited action on Friday, as a late-day sell-off on Wall Street indicated continued concerns about the economy's growth prospects and Europe's debt crisis.

Equities rose for much of the session on expectations that Spain was taking steps to seek a bailout, helping for a time to quell worries about Europe's lingering debt crisis. The benchmark S&P 500 and the Dow, however, ended the day marginally lower, while the Nasdaq eked out a small gain.

Oil prices rose on supply worries over tensions in the Middle East and delays in North Sea shipments. Brent crude climbed 1.3 percent above $111 a barrel, but still finished posted a drop of 4.5 percent on the week.

The euro rose less than 0.1 percent against the dollar. Volume was thin ahead of the weekend and the expiration of options contracts contributed to the late-day volatility.

Traders said the euro may struggle to extend gains amid uncertainty over the timing of a potential bailout in Spain.

"The Spain news was relatively small," said Joseph Greco, managing director of Meridian Equity Partners in New York, though he said "the euro-dollar currency play resulting from that news was definitely something that we spoke about. But it has been a lot of back and forth. I don't anticipate there will be much more room there."

Sources with knowledge of the matter said Spain was considering speeding up a planned rise in the retirement age as it races to cut spending and meet conditions of an expected international sovereign aid package. The sources also said Spain may freeze pensions, something that the country's deputy prime minister later denied.

Germany's finance minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, dented expectations, however, by saying that Spain did not need a sovereign bailout on top of the package already agreed for its banks because it was on the right path to regain the confidence of markets.

Apple Inc, the most valuable U.S. company, rose 0.2 percent as it debuted the latest version of its iPhone worldwide. The stock hit a record high of $705.07 before pulling back to close at $700.09.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 17.46 points, or 0.13 percent, at 13,579.47. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 0.11 points, or 0.01 percent, at 1,460.15. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 4.00 points, or 0.13 percent, at 3,179.96.

For the week, the Dow unofficially fell 0.1 percent, the S&P lost 0.4 percent, and the Nasdaq fell 0.1 percent. The S&P remains up 16 percent on the year, gains that have come on concerted central bank economic stimulus measures, though investors are now looking for reasons to keep pushing equities higher.

European shares closed up 0.4 percent after having briefly tested 14-month highs earlier. Banks led gains, driven by Spanish banks BBVA and Banco Santander on the expectations for progress in solving Spain's debt problem.

The MSCI global index climbed 0.3 percent.

The euro, which has lost around 1.5 percent since hitting a 4-1/2-month high a week ago, was up 0.1 percent at $1.2983, having briefly climbed back above the psychologically important $1.30 mark.

The dollar fell less than 0.1 percent against a basket of currencies to 79.352, bringing it closer to the 6-1/2-month low of 78.601 hit last week in the wake of aggressive monetary easing by the U.S. Federal Reserve.

With all eyes on whether Spain will call for aid, support for the euro was seen at Thursday's low, which stood just above its 233-day moving average at $1.2915.

Markets brushed off a well-flagged report from the UK showing that plans to reduce its deficit have fallen behind target as the European debt crisis has hit global growth.

The news followed Italy's warning late on Wednesday that its recession will be far more severe than forecast, making it harder to reduce the country's debt burden.

UNACCEPTABLE YIELDS

Underlining fears about faltering global growth, the World Trade Organization cut its global trade growth forecast to 2.5 percent from 3.7 percent on Friday. The new forecast, dragged down by Europe, would put trade growth at less than half of the previous 20-year average.

In bond markets, the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was up 4/32 in price for a yield of 1.751 percent.

Yields on Spain and Italy's 10-year bonds were slightly higher, while demand for German government bonds also eased as investors adjusted positions ahead of the weekend amid the growing speculation that Spain is preparing for a bailout. December Bund futures settled at 140.14, down 0.05 percent.

The ECB's new plan that requires struggling countries to submit to fiscal rehabilitation programs in order to qualify for bond-buying support in the open market has been a key factor in the sharp drop in Italian and Spanish borrowing costs and the 15-20 percent surge in major stock markets.

Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine researcher to identify mechanistic link between two serious diseases

Armed with a new $1.8 million grant from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, dermatology researcher Nicole Ward, PhD, assistant professor of dermatology and neurosciences at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine, will lead a study examining the link between psoriasis and heart attack and stroke.

The work will advance research conducted earlier this year in Dr. Ward's lab. She and colleagues at the University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute, published a major discovery that psoriasis could cause the development of cardiovascular disease in mouse models. The team of researchers also found that aggressive treatment of the skin disease reversed the cardiovascular disease.

"Prior to our recent publication, the evidence linking these two diseases was entirely at the epidemiological level and didn't show mechanistic insight for why this occurred," says Dr. Ward, who is also a scientist with the Murdough Family Center for Psoriasis at University Hospitals Case Medical Center. "Our goal was to examine whether psoriasis influences cardiovascular disease. Psoriasis was previously thought of as a disease that severely affected skin appearance as well as the patient's quality of life. We now know it decreases a patient's life span by seven years."

Dr. Ward and colleagues will work to identify intrinsic changes in the skin cells and the subsequent cascade of events that leads to blood-clot formation in either heart attack or stroke. By identifying this trigger, the researchers hope to provide first-ever evidence that cell-specific events in psoriasis can be targeted for treatment.

This preclinical evidence will impact the approach to patient clinical care, as doctors will need to be more aggressive in monitoring for cardiovascular disease and other co-morbidities in those with moderate to severe-plaque psoriasis. By treating and keeping the skin disease in check, the risk for heart-related inflammation is reduced as well. In addition, they will conduct preclinical testing of the efficacy of current psoriasis medication on cardiovascular disease.

"Dr. Ward's research discovery is quite exciting," says Kevin Cooper, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Dermatology at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine and University Hospitals Case Medical Center, "It demonstrates for the first time that a mouse model of psoriasis exhibits a cardiovascular co-morbidity often seen in human psoriasis patients. Importantly, the basis of Dr. Ward's grant demonstrates that aggressively treating the skin disease improved the cardiovascular complications associated with psoriasis. The work supported by this grant will help to pinpoint how current therapeutics for psoriasis may also improve co-morbidities associated with chronic skin inflammation."

Chef in murder trial said he boiled wife's body for 4 days

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Los Angeles-area chef charged with murdering his wife, whose body has never been found, told investigators he cooked her corpse for four days in a vat of boiling water to dispose of the remains, tape recordings of his account showed.

David Viens, 49, whose lawyers were to begin presenting his defense at trial on Wednesday, made the statements in March 2011 under questioning about the 2009 disappearance of his 39-year-old wife, Dawn.

At the time of the two interviews, he was recovering from injuries he had suffered weeks earlier from leaping off a cliff in an apparent suicide attempt. He has appeared in court in a wheelchair.

Viens, a chef who owned a restaurant with his wife in the town of Lomita, south of Los Angeles, told detectives in the recordings that during a quarrel with his spouse he bound and gagged her with duct tape and went to sleep.

Viens, who has pleaded not guilty to murder, was vague about the reason for the fight, saying in the taped interviews that it "seemed like it had to do with her stealing money." But he said he awoke hours later to find her dead, panicked and decided to dispose of her body by boiling it.

Viens then described in grisly detail how he placed her corpse face down into a large vat that held the entire body, and kept it submerged with weights.

"And I just slowly cooked it and I ended up cooking her for four days," he told detectives in one of the two recordings played in court on Tuesday.

"You cooked on Dawn's body for four days?" one sheriff's sergeant is heard asking Viens, to which he replied, "Before it was done." He added that he then let the remains cool, "strained it out" and disposed of what was left in garbage bags mixed in with other debris and waste in a dumpster.

He also told detectives in the recordings that he believed he may have had one bag of body parts left over, saying, "I'm confused now, and - because of these dreams and stuff I've had. I think the skull is there ... In my mother's attic."

Sheriff's Sergeant Richard Garcia testified that detectives searched the attic in Viens' mother's home but found nothing.

Under cross-examination by defense lawyer Fred McCurry, the sergeant acknowledged there was no physical evidence to establish how Viens' wife died, or that establishes that her body was disposed of by cooking.

Spiritual Strength

Spiritual teachings stress wisdom, love, respect, bravery, honesty, humility and truth as the values that enable people to live in a way that promotes harmony and balance with everyone and everything in creation.

Think of a compass rose, defining the four directions and representing a particular way of perceiving things, but none is considered superior or more significant than the other. The emphasis is always placed on the need to seek and explore each of the four great ways in order to gain a thorough understanding of one's own nature in relation to the surrounding world. The four cardinal points of the circle transcend the mere compass directions. The directions themselves embody four powerful natural forces representing seasonal influences associated with various other powerful attributes.North represents Wisdom. Its colour is white, its power animal is the buffalo and its gift is strength and endurance. From the South comes the gift of warmth and growth after winter is over, a place of innocence and trust. Its colour is green (or sometimes red), its power animal, the mouse. To the West is the place of introspection, of looking within one's spirit. Its colour is black, its gift is rain and its power animal the bear. The East is marked by the sign of the Eagle. Its colour is gold for the sun's illumination, the new dawning sky and enlightenment. Its gift is peace and light.

As a guide to strenthening the spirit, think of four hills representing infancy, youth, maturity and old age. The four stages are celebrated in ritual as the four prime moments in life corresponding to the four directions. The first hill is the south (innocence and trust) where the infant's reception into life occurs. The second hill, that of introspection, in the west, becomes the youth's solitary vigil and quest for vision. This first quest seeks the revelation of the Great Spirit's manifestation and continuing presence. This is the time when a power animal attribute enters an individual's soul becoming a part of his or her identity (eagle, bear, tiger and so on). It marks the beginning of the dweller within, the dreaming soul that contacts the higher spiritual planes bringing back visions that serve as fundamental guide posts in life. The hill of maturity lies to the north and represents the successful realization of ability and ambition. It is the place of recognition in which the pursuit of wisdom underlies and nourishes all action.Sympathy with life itself grows in this quarter. The final hill is that of old age situated in the east. It represents a quiet, reflective and meditative segment where the old ones now can pass on their knowledge to youth as they have mastered the meaning of joy and sorrow and the many other trials and tribulations encountered over the course of their existence.

Strong scientific evidence suggests that individuals who regularly participate in spiritual worship services or related activities and who feel strongly that spirituality or the presence of a higher being or power are sources of strength and comfort to them are healthier and possess greater healing capabilities. Numerous research investigations have reported positive correlations between spirituality and decreased rates of stroke, cancer, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, drug abuse, suicide, and general mortality. It has been suggested that faith is beneficial for health and healing because it helps people avoid unhealthy behaviors such as smoking and excessive drinking. However, studies designed to statistically control for such factors also report positive associations between spirituality and health in individuals with unhealthy behaviors.

The impact of spirituality on health and healing is a topic that has been virtually ignored in the disciplines of athletic training and sports medicine. Because of their lack of exposure to this topic, most nutritionists, dietitians and athletic trainers are unaware of the many positive associations that exist between spirituality, health and healing. The available literature base regarding this topic is quite large; its findings need to be explored and integrated as one component for those who wish to loose weight.

JD Kaz describes a philosophy for which overweight people can apply while trying to not only loose, but also to keep those unwanted pounds at bay. By addressing each component (mind, body and spirit) through exercise, diet and spiritualism, he was able to adjust his own lifestyle, to replace excess, with strength. Please consider this rationale as a roadmap to better health and wellness. For more information please go to http://elegantthin.com

Aviator sign 300x200 Take Flight at Aviator Brewing Company

I had a Living Social coupon that was about to expire to the Aviator Brewing Company so Brad and I made the 1/2-hour or so trek to Fuquay Varina last weekend to check out the place. The coupon included a tour of the brewery, two Aviator pint glasses, some stickers and a growler of Aviator?s HotRod Red. I am so glad I bought this coupon ? I learned quite a bit from the tour and the beer I tried was great! I also like that we were supporting a local business.

Aviator Brewing Company (209 Technology Park Lane, Fuquay Varina, N.C. 27526) was established late in 2008 in an airplane hangar and has quickly grown into a popular (and award-winning) brewery. Timeline highlights include:

  • 2008:?? Started with two used dairy tanks, which held 300 gallons of beer. Added two used 30bbl fermentors as demand increased.
  • 2009: Began distribution into the Triangle area.
  • 2010: Moved from the airplane hangar at Triple W airport to its current location, as demand for Aviator beer grew faster than it could brew.
  • 2011: Added an 8-head Cimec 22 oz. bottling system to put some of its beer on store shelves.
  • 2012: Canning system to be installed in the late summer/early fall. Cans should be on store shelves soon!

The Aviator Brewing Company is open to the public Thursday-Saturdays. There?s a tasting room where you can sample all of the beers and it has kegs, growlers and bottled beer for sale. There?s also seating outside. Check out Aviator?s website for hours, tour times, and what?s on tap at: http://www.aviatorbrew.com/

We had about 25 minutes before our tour was going to start, so Brad ordered a pint of the Hog Wild Indian Pale Ale (6.7% alcohol.) Aviator?s website describes this beer as ?a golden brew made with Pale Ale and Vienna malts. A veritable fest of the big ?C? hops: Chinook, Columbus, Cascade. Dry hopped with Magnum, Williamette and Amarillo. A very hoppy and refreshing ale.? Brad really liked this beer and agreed that it was quite hoppy.

Take Flight at Aviator Brewing Company

I enjoyed the seasonal OktoberBeast (7.2% alcohol.) This beer?s normally brewed in March and aged cold over the summer so it can be served in the fall. It is hoppier than most Oktoberfest beers since the brew masters like hops. So do I, and found this beer to be tasty ? I would definitely order it again.

Take Flight at Aviator Brewing Company

The tour was informative and interesting ? it was fun to learn about the ingredients, the brewing process and what each of the machines did.? Our tour guide, Chris, was laid back, friendly and quite knowledgeable ? you can tell he loves his work!

Take Flight at Aviator Brewing Company

As previously mentioned, Aviator is going to start canning its beer and there were 385,000 newly delivered cans throughout the brewery. The canning machine should arrive anytime now, and production will begin!

Take Flight at Aviator Brewing Company

After the tour, we received our growler full of HotRod Red, which basically is a classic Irish Red Ale. I didn?t try it, but Brad was fond of it.

Take Flight at Aviator Brewing Company

We also purchased a 22 oz. bottle of BlackMamba Oatmeal Stout (6.5% alcohol.) Aviator?s website describes this stout as having has an explosion of flavor created by dark roasted grains and a 2-row barley, with tastes of chocolate and smoothness from the oatmeal. This beer is aged in bourbon barrels.

Take Flight at Aviator Brewing Company

I am a big fan of stouts, and BlackMamba did not disappoint! In addition to the chocolate flavors, the bourbon taste from the barrel is quite apparent. I love this beer and will look for it in local stores.

Take Flight at Aviator Brewing Company

Right down the road from the Brewery is the Aviator Smokehouse and the Aviator Tap House, where you can enjoy various smoked meats and Aviator beer, of course. I have heard from several people that the food at the Smokehouse is awesome, and since I already can vouch for some of the beer, I think another road trip to Fuquay is in order!

Take Flight at Aviator Brewing Company

I have a feeling that Aviator is going to continue to increase its production and that the canned beer is going to fly off the shelves. If you have time, go check out this brewery, sample some of the beer and take a tour. I?ll be glad to tag along, and will buy the first round!

Eat, drink and be merry!

Dubai becoming a major hub for online and video games industry in ...

Dubai continues to position itself as a major hub for online and video games industry in the Middle East and worldwide. With more than $100m in revenues from the online gaming industry in the Middle East, experts revealed that the United Arab Emirates has a big share in this industry especially after it was ranked 5th largest in the Middle East for internet usage.

The online gaming industry is at its highest among the rest and experts are expecting this number to double in the coming few years.

Moreover, the worldwide online gaming market is projected to grow to $20bn by the end of 2012.

Experts in the Game industry in the Middle East and game developers had revealed lately that the ME online gamers community are now considered the fastest growing among others globally and that the industry is witnessing a phenomenal growth.

Moreover, demographics show that the gaming industry in the Middle East will continue to boom for many years to come due to the unprecedented number of gamers whom are increasing every day in addition to the increase in the number of internet users which is estimated at 70 million users in the ME and are expected to reach 150 million in 2015.

The increase in the number of internet users is connected to the increase in the number of gamers, as most of the gamers prefer online games more than video games where they can compete with local, regional and international gamers whenever they want and wherever they are.

This trend has been taking a new dimension for the past five years, and youth ? whom are 60% of the Arab population, are getting more attracted and attached to online games.

Facebook for example features thousands of games where you can play with your friends or any other competitors on the social network, while statistics reveal that there are 2.89 million Arabic gamers playing on Facebook every month while the total number of Facebook users reached 24 million.

Nexon ? a worldwide leader in online games ? is to debut in the Middle East through participating in the upcoming edition of the Dubai World Game Expo which is part of the Big Entertainment Show in Dubai ? the United Arab Emirates.

They are looking forward to explore the Middle East platforms through BES hoping that they will also meet some service providers whom can bridge the gap between Nexon and online games consumers.

Nexon?s robust portfolio includes more than 50 games that are available in more than 100 countries including china, Korea, Japan, North America and Europe. Nexon titles appeal to more than 77 million monthly active users across the globe.

Their titles include popular franchises such as MapleStory, KartRider, Dungeon and many more. KartRider alone has more than 220 million registered users worldwide.

Turkey?s Peak Games has stated that the value of the regional online gaming industry is about $100m compared to last year?s estimated $70m.

The next phase of growth lies with Arabic localized content, which is moving rapidly to catch up with counterparts from the west, and with the growth of the video game industry in the Middle East, many service providers are joining their efforts and some are emerging in order to fill the gap and demand for complementary services such as mobile and online payment gateways.

Istanbul-headquartered social gaming company Peak Games is the 3rd largest social gaming firm which focuses on the Middle East Region and has 9.7 million daily active users worldwide on Facebook, compared with 56 million for Zynga and 12 million for King.com. One of the reasons that Peak has grown so fast is that half of Turkey?s population has internet access and a significant number of them use Facebook.

Thousands of enthusiasts including developers, publishers, distributors, payment providers and gamers are geared up to take part in the fifth edition of the Dubai World Game Expo, which is part of The Big Entertainment Show.

Interest in the Dubai World Game Expo this year is large with exhibitors from several countries such as South Korea, China, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Germany, Portugal, India, the United States and Japan.

As the industry continues to grow, the demand for service providers continues to increase. The Dubai World Game Expo organizers announced that a number of payment gateway providers such as Onecard and Mopay are among the exhibitors that provide online payment solutions.

These companies will fill the need for online gaming companies who are keen to enter the Middle East gaming market.

The Big entertainment Show has become the largest show in the Middle East Region specialized in Media and TV content, Character and Brand Licensing, Game Developing and publishing, in addition to all trading companies working in the export and import business.

This unique event which combines the ?Dubai International Character and Licensing Fair?, ?Dubai World Game Expo? and ?Mycontent? attracts TV broadcasters, game developers, investors and licensors from all parts of the world to the Middle East Market, which is considered one of the biggest importing markets for this industry.

The Show is scheduled from the 27th ? 28th of November this year at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The event will highlight the importance of this promising market and the need to develop proper Arabic content, learn from the foreign experiences and the success stories during the event?s summit and educational sessions.

Dark Energy Camera whirs to life, begins snapping deep-space photos

Scientists think dark energy makes up 74 percent of the universe, yet they have very little idea what it is.

The images represent the first observations ? called "first light" ? of an instrument called the Dark Energy Camera that was eight years in the works.

"The achievement of first light through the?Dark Energy Camera?begins a significant new era in our exploration of the cosmic frontier," James Siegrist, associate director of science for high energy physics at the U.S. Department of Energy, said in a statement. "The results of this survey will bring us closer to understanding the mystery of dark energy, and what it means for the universe."

Scientists think?dark energy?makes up 74 percent of the universe, yet they have very little idea what it is. For now, it is the name given to the force that's counteracting gravity, causing the expansion of the universe to accelerate. [Photos: Dark Energy Camera]

The Dark Energy Camera is designed to study this puzzle by mapping out the distant universe to more accurate pin down its current and past expansion rates.

"The Dark Energy Survey will help us understand why the expansion of the universe is accelerating, rather than slowing due to gravity," said Brenna Flaugher, project manager and scientist at Fermilab. "It is extremely satisfying to see the efforts of all the people involved in this project finally come together."

The new instrument ? a 570-megapixel camera ? took its first photos on Sept. 12, taking aim at a portion of the southern sky from atop a mountain in the Chilean Andes. The Dark Energy Camera was built at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, Ill., and was installed on the Victor M. Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, the southern branch of the U.S. National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO).

Each photo by the camera can capture up to 100,000 galaxies as far away as 8 billion light-years.

"We're very excited to bring the Dark Energy Camera online and make it available for the astronomical community through NOAO's open access telescope allocation," said Chris Smith, director of the Cerro-Tololo Inter-American Observatory. "With it, we provide astronomers from all over the world a powerful new tool to explore the outstanding questions of our time, perhaps the most pressing of which is the?nature of dark energy."

In December, after the camera is tested, it will begin the Dark Energy Survey, the largest galaxy survey ever undertaken, by mapping one-eighth of the sky. Researchers estimate the survey should spot 300 million galaxies, 100,000 galaxy clusters and 4,000 exploding stars, called supernovas.
