Hipmunk receives big update, now offers hotel search and booking

Hipmunk

Hipmunk, the popular flight search app, has received a major update that has expanded its reach to include hotels. The UI is as clean as before and the search works rather well. Simply open the app, select Find Hotels, specify a location, click Search and that's it! You'll be given a variety of listings, which you can then dive into with reviews and information. If you decide that you like a hotel, you can book it through one of Hipmunk's partners. When I tried a few hotels, I was able to book through Hotels.com, Orbitz and Booking.com.

This seems like a natural step  and a welcome one for Hipmunk to take and they've executed it very well. Please find download links for the free app and more screenshots after the break.

After effort, Huntsman puts brave face on third place (Reuters)

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (Reuters) ? Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman put a brave face on a third-place finish in the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday that kept him in the White House race but raised questions about how much longer he can hold on.

After campaigning almost exclusively in New Hampshire in recent months, Huntsman pulled in 17 percent, with votes counted from two-thirds of the state's precincts.

That was better than his showing in many opinion polls but still short of the kind of strong surge he needed to present a big threat to front-runner Mitt Romney.

Huntsman is likely to struggle at the next primary on January 21 in South Carolina, where traditionally conservative voters are unlikely to embrace his positions like support for gay civil unions and pulling out of Afghanistan as soon as possible.

"I'd say third place is a ticket to ride, ladies and gentleman," Huntsman told supporters after results came in on Tuesday, promising to head to South Carolina.

Huntsman traveled thousands of miles criss-crossing New Hampshire since May in a black SUV, attending almost 170 events in his strategy to concentrate on retail politics in a state where Republican voters are moderate and independent thinkers.

LATE POLLS BOOST

He received a last minute boost in polls with a nicely landed punch in a debate last weekend against Romney, who had chided him for working as ambassador to China for President Barack Obama.

Huntsman responded that he was serving his country while Romney was spending years trolling for campaign donations after a failed 2008 bid for the White House. The crack drew one of the biggest rounds of applause.

"Since Sunday morning's debate, that day we quadrupled our best ever fund-raising day," Michael Levoff, Huntsman's New Hampshire campaign spokesman, told Reuters. "We will have the resources to compete in South Carolina and Florida," he said.

Huntsman has also been at the forefront of attacks against Romney for his role as a venture capitalist in the 1990s.

It was just a few weeks ago that Huntsman made a plea on Facebook for $100,000 in campaign donations so he could buy television advertising in New Hampshire.

The money dribbled in over several days after the candidate offered to match donations, and the TV spots ran - emphasizing Huntsman's credentials as a "true conservative."

Much interest has centered on the SuperPAC funding group that has been backing Huntsman with television ads describing frontrunner Romney as a "chameleon" and whether the candidate's billionaire father, businessman Jon Huntsman Sr, was bankrolling the group.

Golf: Oosthuizen retains title

01/08/2012 08:09:32 PM

South African Louis Oosthuizen defended his Africa Open title, winning by two shots on Sunday.

Oosthuizen finished his four days play at the East London Golf Club with a remarkable score of 27-under which was enough to stave off the challenge of compatriot Tjaart Van der Walt.

Van der Walt, who is ranked 347th in the world, has not won in 15 years as a professional and perhaps will never come closer.

He led early in the day but was unable to keep up the momentum as Oosthuizen held on for victory, while another South African, Retief Goosen, was a shot further behind in third.

Oosthuizen started the day in a share of the lead but an early birdie was followed by a bogey and an eagle as he struggled for consistency.

Another bogey on the fifth threatened to derail Oosthuizen but he fired four birdies in his next six holes and kept his cool on the back nine to retain his title.

Van der Walt began with three birdies in succession but only added two more for the rest of his round before a bogey on the second-last hole meant he had to settle for second.

Goosen finished with a three-under 69 while Jaco Van Zyl made sure South Africa filled the top four spots on the leaderboard as he shot a 66 to claim outright fourth.

Scotland's Alastair Forsyth was next best with 22-under while South African Richard Sterne was sixth and England's Danny Willett seventh.

Lyle Rowe made it six South Africans in the top 10 as he tied for eighth with Craig Lee of Scotland.

Lenovo's IdeaPad Yoga convertible tablet runs Windows 8, is set to arrive later this year for 'around $1,000'

If CES is the place where companies can demo products they don't intend to sell for another six months, what better place for PC makers to tease their first Windows 8 tablets? Though the OS isn't expected to reach its final stage until later this year, Lenovo is already showing off the IdeaPad Yoga, a convertible tablet with a screen that flips over, like a cover on a spiral-bound book. If you like, you can bend it partway so that the keyboard functions as a stand when you're in the mood to watch a movie.

Based on our conversations with Lenovo reps, it's clear the company sees this as a laptop first, and tablet second. The proof is in the specs, really. It weighs "less than 1.5kg," or 3.3 pounds, making it heavier than some Ultrabooks. Not only is its display IPS, but it boasts 1600 x 900 resolution -- an unheard of pixel count for tablets, let alone most 13-inch laptops. And when this hits, it'll pack "next-generation" (read: Ivy Bridge) Intel Core processors -- albeit, of the ULV variety. Accordingly, it has a laptop price: around $1,000, when it eventually ships, sometime later this year after Windows 8 gets finalized.

Fortunately, the battery life is worthy of a tablet: Lenovo says the 54Wh juicepack can last up to eight hours.

If you only have five minutes, we highly suggest you meet us past the break for some hands-on impressions and not one, but two videos. Seriously, folks, even next to all the Android tablets, chubby Ultrabooks and baby scales that have been announced at CES, this is by far the most memorable thing we've seen. Do it. You know you're curious.

OnTip 3-in-1 Gloves Review

The winter has arrived and temperatures are dropping across the northern hemisphere. For those of us that live in a cold climate and love our gadgets that means having to take off our gloves to use our touch screen devices, leaving our precious digits exposed to the elements, or does it? A company, by the [...]

Three Creative Gifts for Kate Middleton's 30th Birthday (ContributorNetwork)

The Duchess of Cambridge is preparing to head into a new decade of life and she literally has everything. She's married a prince and has more money than can possibly be spent. However, with a little creativity, one can think of a few things that Kate Middleton may enjoy.

A Day of Anonymity

Most folks will never know what it is like to have their entire lives shrouded in cameras and scrutiny. This is Kate Middleton's reality 24 hours a day. Perhaps her body double, Camilla Luddington, could step in for a day and distract the paparazzi so that Kate can have a day without all of the lights and flashes. Maybe a miracle will happen and science will intervene and she will have a way to be invisible for a day. This is unlikely, so it looks like Luddington is her best shot at some chance of anonymity.

A Traditional Birthday Party

For Kate Middleton, life is everything but traditional. Perhaps a traditional birthday party with a cake, ice cream, close family and a few close friends would be very refreshing. They could also toss in a few favorite games (either adult-friendly or those from her childhood). They could add balloons and silly hats, confetti and other traditional birthday decorations.

A Chance to Speak to Princess Diana

This will obviously never come to fruition, but it would probably be an amazing experience for her if she was ever able to. Princess Diana is probably the only person who would have been able to truly relate to what Kate Middleton will experience as the years pass. Having her around would have likely been tremendously helpful. Having an opportunity for just a single conversation would have probably been incredibly enlightening for the new Duchess. Her new prince would have probably appreciated sharing such a gift as well.
