Uncoiling the cucumber's enigma: Biological mechanism for coiling, and unusual type of spring discovered

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? In the creeping plant's tendrils, researchers discover a biological mechanism for coiling and stumble upon an unusual type of spring

Captivated by a strange coiling behavior in the grasping tendrils of the cucumber plant, researchers at Harvard University have characterized a new type of spring that is soft when pulled gently and stiff when pulled strongly.

Instead of unwinding to a flat ribbon under stress, as an untwisted coil normally would, the cucumber's tendrils actually coil further. Understanding this counterintuitive behavior required a combination of head scratching, physical modeling, mathematical modeling, and cell biology -- not to mention a large quantity of silicone.

The result, published in the August 31 issue of Science, describes the mechanism by which coiling occurs in the cucumber plant and suggests a new type of bio-inspired twistless spring.

Led by principal investigator L. Mahadevan, Lola England de Valpine Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and Professor of Physics at Harvard, and a Core Faculty Member at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard, the researchers were motivated by simple curiosity about the natural world.

"Nature has solved all kinds of energetic and mechanical problems, doing it very slowly and really getting it right," says lead author Sharon Gerbode, a former postdoctoral fellow at SEAS who has now advanced to a faculty position in the physics department at Harvey Mudd College. "But few people have studied biological mechanisms from the point of view of a physicist or an engineer. We barely had to scratch the surface with this question about the cucumber -- how does it coil? What could be a simpler question? And what we actually found was this new kind of spring that no one had characterized before."

Well known to botanists and gardeners, the coiling tendrils of climbing plants like cucumbers, sweet peas, and grape vines allow the plants to hoist themselves up towards sunlight and secure themselves tightly to existing structures like trees or trellises. Yet the biological and physical mechanism of this coiling, at the level of the plant's cells and tissues, has remained a mystery.

A cucumber tendril begins as a straight stem that elongates until it finds something to latch onto. Then, secured at both ends, it forms a left-handed helix and a right-handed helix, joined at the center by a "perversion" -- Charles Darwin's strikingly Victorian term for the point at which the coiling changes direction.

"It's easy to create one of these twistless springs with a telephone cord," says Gerbode, "and they're annoying. But with the phone cord, you can pull on both ends and it will straighten out into a flat ribbon. What's strange about the cucumber tendril is that if you pull on the ends, it actually overwinds, adding more turns to both helices."

To explore the mechanism for this behavior, Gerbode and her Harvard colleagues took a closer look at the cells and tissue types inside the tendril.

A fibrous ribbon, made of thread-like cells called gelatinous fiber (g-fiber) cells, runs the length of each tendril. Two cell layers thick, this ribbon appears to provide the force required for the tendril to form a helix without the benefit of muscles. If the cells on one side of such a ribbon were to contract, the researchers thought, it would force the ribbon to curve and coil.

Gerbode and her coauthor Joshua Puzey (Ph.D. '12), who was studying organismic and evolutionary biology in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) at the time, tried to reconstruct this fiber ribbon with a silicone model. They stretched a sheet of elastic silicone, secured the ends, and then spread a thin layer of silicone caulk across its surface. When the caulk cured, they cut a thin strip off the model, held both ends, and watched it coil into a pair of perfect helices. When they pulled on both ends, however, it simply unraveled and lay flat, adding no extra coils as they had hoped.

"This is when I spent a lot of time pulling on telephone cords," Gerbode admits.

The clue, as it turns out, was inside the g-fiber cells. These cells have been studied extensively in trees; they have the ability to shrink or elongate, thanks to a special type of architecture in the cell wall.

"What we think may be happening is that the inner cell layer of the tendril has more lignin in it, which is a sort of glue that gives cell walls stiffness and holds together the cellulose microfibrils, which are like rebar in the cells," explains Puzey. "We thought this stiffness must be related to the coiling somehow."

To test this idea, Gerbode and Puzey glued a fabric ribbon to one side of their silicone model and a copper wire to the other side. At last, the silicone strip formed a pair of helices that overwound, just like the cucumber tendril.

The structure they stumbled upon is a spring made of two joined, opposite-handed helices whose bending stiffness is higher than their twisting stiffness. In other words, to form this specific structure, the materials involved have to make it easier for the ribbon to twist axially than to change its curvature. Through mathematical models developed by Mahadevan and coauthor Andrew McCormick (a physics graduate student in GSAS), the team was able to fully understand the parameters and synthesize a simple principle for the design of these springs.

The final stage in the research was to address the biological implications. By extracting the fiber ribbon from a cucumber tendril, Mahadevan's group had already noticed that moisture was playing a role in the spring's behavior. As the extracted ribbon dried out, its stiffness increased and it coiled more tightly. Lignin is also known to be hydrophobic, repelling water. What's more, Mahadevan's team measured the mechanical response of young tendrils and older ones, finding that the older tendrils put up much more resistance to pulling, a fact that they explained using a combination of theory and computer simulations.

Though the group has not yet explored these findings from an evolutionary perspective, they hypothesize that the mature coil structure allows the climbing plants just the right amount of structural flexibility.

"You want the plant to make a nice strong, secure connection, but you also don't want it to be too stiff or to snap," explains Gerbode. "You want it to have a little bit of flexibility so that if the wind blows or an animal brushes past it, it doesn't break. So one possibility is that this overwinding allows the plant to easily accommodate small motions, but then if something really serious happens it can get very stiff and protect itself."

To further study the evolutionary significance of the tendril's morphology, researchers would have to study the coils in numerous species and attempt to reconstruct the evolutionary history of that characteristic. Mahadevan suggests that such a project could provide important ecological insights.

"The advantage of using a tendril is that the plant saves on complex machinery to build structural supports such as trunks and branches," Mahadevan says. "The disadvantage is that it must depend on other species to build these supports. Thus, tendrils are an adaptation that is likely to develop only in regions replete with vegetation that can provide supports and where competition for resources is intense.

"The real question remains this: how difficult is it to evolve such tendril-like solutions?"

Now that nature has done the hard work, though, Mahadevan suggests that the benefits of understanding cucumber coils might be useful in technology -- but hastens to add that this work was driven by pure curiosity, not with an end product in mind.

"This is likely to be useful anywhere we need a spring with a tunable mechanical response," he says.

This work was supported by the MacArthur Foundation, the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard, and the Kavli Institute for Bionano Science and Technology at Harvard. The researchers are now pursuing a patent on the technology, through the Wyss Institute.

An Elegy in the Ashes

A millennium ago, a terrible cataclysm sunk the world into the very depths of Hell. The surface left unlivable, life turned its head toward the one place left untouched by disaster?the floating continent of Manus Luna. . . .

The Following of the Great Mother

The dominate church within Portum Animas. Founded around the belief that the destruction of Viridis Mater was the doing of humanity, and the notion that the planet itself saved all the lives that came to be upon Manus Luna, the Following was once a benevolent sect of people who believed in what they preached. Over the years, and after the founding of Portum Animas, the church served as a guiding influence in the development and building of the city. Due to their deep-rooted influence within the city, the general populace of Portum Animas still finds themselves feeling a connection to the Following. As such, it?s common and easy for the church to sway the opinions and beliefs of people nowadays.

However, in the recent years, no one has quite come to realize just how very different the church has become since its initial founding. Matters regarding the Gifted and such are a very cut and dry topic as far as the Following is concerned; they strictly view the Gifted as being influenced and as people who?ve been corrupted by Discordic; the being they view as their devil.

In line with their supposed will to do good for people, the Following offers up healing services for people who have been injured or who suffer from physical problems by means of the Passively Gifted that work for them.

The Gifted

A sect of the population within Portum Animas whose natural powers have taken a turn for the drastic. Unlike those who are normal, these people have developed their powers to inhuman levels. These are people who are considered to be dangerous and are called out by the Following, and are considered to be evil, and are named as such. In order for the Following to maintain control over the populace, and to keep panic from inciting, they give out a false explanation for why the Gifted are born, and why it is that their powers are so different from everyone else?s.

The Gifted are not treated as human by any means if they are discovered as such. The Following has twisted the minds of so many people in Portum Animas, that even families will turn against their own if they are found out as a Gifted. They have no rights to speak of, none at all. More often than not, if a Gifted is discovered out and reported to the proper authorities, they are detained, and taken in for ?cleansing.? Because it is believed by so many that the Gifted have had their senses warped and distorted by Discordic, and that they have been twisted to want to cause misfortune and chaos with their powers, the Gifted are feared. Greatly feared by many.

Once a Gifted has been detained by the church and government, that is often the last time they are seen by their families and friends. Despite the fact that they are suppose to taken in to undergo a process called a ?cleansing,? it is a known fact that most who have to go through this process do not survive, as it is explained by the church that cleansing one of Discordic is a dangerous and near fatal process. . . . Those Gifted who have been successfully cleansed, and survive often wind up going into service of the Following, as their powers will have taken a turn from destructive, and with their souls freed of Discordic?s evil and corruption, they would?ve seen the ?light,? and come to serve the Following in order to absolve themselves of their sins. Those Gifted who?ve survived their cleansings are noted as ?Passive Gifted? due to the change their powers undergo.

Cleansing

A process employed by the Following in order to purge the evils of Discordic from the souls of those he has corrupted; otherwise known as the Gifted. The exact details and steps of this . . . process are unknown but to a select few individuals within the church who have been trained specifically to carry it out. It is said to be a very hard, very thing to both undergo and to carry out on a person, as it pits the employer?s soul against the corrupted soul of the Gifted. The Following explains a cleansing to be so harsh due to what must happen in order for Discordic?s grasp upon the afflicted?s soul to be relinquished. It is said that during this process, the soul of the one carrying it out and undergoing it must be called from their body, and because an average person has not had the training to undergo a separation of their soul from their body, when Discordic?s hold has been terminated upon them . . . the soul slips away.

It loses touch with its body and ascends to the afterlife, leaving the Gifted as good as dead. There are a few select people though who?ve been strong enough to remain alive through this, and have their souls cleaned of evil?s touch. These are the Passively Gifted; often after they?ve undergone their cleansing, they come to aid the Following with their changed powers. They will have gone from possessing powers of destruction, to being capable of ?constructive? things, such as being able to heal others. It is believed by many that those individuals who?ve been trained to carry out the cleansing process are themselves some of the few individuals who managed to survive it, and become a Passively Gifted.

Passively Gifted

These are the Gifted who?ve undergone the cleansing process and managed to survive it intact. With their souls eliminated of evil, they are more or less always found working for the Following, using their purified powers to go good. Unlike their selves prior, they possess no destructive powers or abilities that could be used to harm anyone, instead, their powers are useful for doing only things such as healing wounds and such. Healing services are offered by the church because of the powers of these people.

Harmonia

The Great Mother whom is worshipped by the Following, she is the central figure in their stories and religion. Believed to be the being which embodies the will of the planet itself, she is seen as a benevolent mother figure in every story, and the Following believes she saved humanity from itself long ago, and still loves them dearly. She is the patron Goddess for the Following, and the majority of Portum Animas honors her.

Discordic

The being whom is believed to have been spawned of humanity?s own evils a millennium ago. A destructive and chaotic force, he is viewed as a demonic presence who very nearly destroyed all of humankind before, and is thought to be the reason that the world below Manus Luna vanished into a sea of toxic clouds. Despite being defeated at the hands of Harmonia, Discordic is still viewed as an active threat in the world; so long as humanity exists, so will Discordic?s evil. Because it is explained and believed that Discordic is the reason that the Gifted exist, the Gifted are regarded with terrible treatment and are viewed as an incarnation of Discordic himself.

The Sanctified

These are the people who carry out the process of Cleansing within the Following. They are sparse and few, and have been rigidly trained in order to carry out their jobs without a problem. These people are rumored and are believed to be some of the few Gifted who managed to survive a Cleansing themselves, and are truly thought to be Passively Gifted individuals.

Mitt Romney Utilizes Clever Wealth Transfer & Estate Planning - PWM

Mitt Romney's head on monopoly man body - Playing on recent news of his Estate & Wealth Strategies

| Featured Author:?Austin Hagaman?|

Austin Hagaman's pencil headshot | PWMRomney?s Tax Returns Reveal Trusts that Shield Money from the IRS

Americans are allowed to pay the lowest tax they are legally obligated to pay and that is exactly what Mitt Romney has done over the past decade. The Republican presidential candidate and his wife, Anne, have used complex wealth transfer and estate planning techniques to minimize taxes and accrue an estimated $100 million for their family outside of their estate.

Bloomberg reports that in 1995 Romney created two trusts. One of the trusts was formed for their children with investments focused on appreciation and the other was for charity that provides a tax deduction and income.

?The Romneys have transferred assets into the family trust and invested them, amassing a substantial and diversified portfolio,? Bloomberg states. ?In 2010 alone, the trust realized more than $7 million in long-term capital gains, about $1.5 million in ordinary dividends and $741,407 in U.S. government interest, according to the trust?s tax return.?

This information indicates that Romney has taken advantage of tax planning techniques ?that are similar to what other high-net ?worth families do,? David Scott Sloan, chairman at the law firm Holland & Knight LLP in Boston, told Bloomberg.

Democrats have scrutinized Romney for exploiting the tax code saying that as a high-net-worth individual he is out of touch with many Americans. I, on the other hand, ask what American would knowingly pay more taxes than what he legally owes?

A Closer Look at Romney?s Trusts

Defective Grantor Trust

According to Bloomberg, the Romneys opened a defective grantor trust for their children. Using this type of trust, Romney (the grantor) has been able to pay the tax bill on the trust?s accumulating income for the benefit of his children. By not paying the taxes out of trust, the assets have more potential to grow outside of the estate.

Charitable Remainder Trust

State financial disclosure documents show that the Romneys also set up a charitable remainder trust (or CRUT). A CRUT is not just a nice way to move money out of an estate by donating to charity; it also pays income to the beneficiary and allows for a tax deduction amounting to the value that is expected to go to charity.

Romney Has More than One Reason to Win this November?s Election

It is expected that Romney?s wallet will take a hit if President Barrack Obama reclaims his title as POTUS.

?The Romneys would pay higher taxes under the estate-tax proposal of President Barack Obama and would pay less under Romney?s plan. Obama has proposed increasing the estate tax from current levels (to a 45% top rate) and curtailing wealth-transfer strategies. The Republican presidential candidate wants to eliminate the estate tax, which currently applies to a top rate of 35% and a $10.24 million exemption on a married couple?s combined assets,? the article explains.

Assuming a combined taxable estate of $200 million after deductions for items such as administrative expenses and charitable contributions, a repeal of the levy may save the Romneys about $70 million in federal estate taxes after they both die, Bloomberg concludes. When compared with today?s rates, Obama?s tax proposal may cost the Romneys an extra $20 million.

Create a web based Small business Site | SEA STONE ...

Hundreds of people today every day are planning to develop an internet Net Based Company. You are able to recognize the demand for online company by taking a look at the searches created on the search engines like google. They?re phrases like generate a web based business site web, business on the web smaller net, enterprise online page, business, on the internet site web, internet hosting for on the web business enterprise and on-line website small business opportunity just to mention some.

Lately I wrote a number of articles, one particular about specific landing pages, a further about matching keyword phrases to certain landing pages plus the last one was on keyword pricing. This time I am going to cover several uncomplicated methods to monitor your campaigns in order that you make certain you might be accomplishing what you set out to perform. Otherwise you will not bear the fruits of your efforts.

As I talked about in my other articles you ought to make sure that you have a different landing page on your internet site for each and every area of you organization. By way of example on my web page I?ve a landing page for Function At Residence, Best 10 organization, Home Based Business, Moms Jobs, Affiliates, Data Entry, On line Paid Surveys and a link to my real time newsletter.

When utilizing 1 in the tools offered to us known as (PPC) Paid Per Click Marketing, whereby we pay a search engine pennies to show our ad when an individual sorts in specific keyword. As I mentioned in my other report you have to break up your keywords and phrases in such a manner as to possess all your key phrases on a given subject sent to the specific landing page. As an example it is best to have all Operate At Property keyword phrases go to your landing page, which can be mostly about Operate At House tips. Like wise have you keywords and phrases on Household Based Enterprise visit the landing page that highlights Property Based Small business Possibilities.

Moreover you don?t need to bidding against your self so you would like to make certain that you do not mix and match your keyword phrases. You may need to advertise only the keyword phrases that match a distinct landing page when employing (PPC) Paid Per Click Marketing. Don?t have Work At Home search phrases mixed in with On the web Paid Surveys sending men and women to several landing Pages.

You are going to wish to use several variation of a given keyword. Take into consideration the conversation going on within your customer?s head. What would you kind in should you had been looking for exactly the same factor What would other individuals kind Don?t just set you campaigns to run on a maximum price per click. Do some analysis to see just how much a specific keyword is becoming searched for. This can make it easier to set your keyword pricing.

To ensure that you could ensure that your efforts are working you could monitor your campaigns on each search engine. Every search engine need to have a reports page, whereby you may look up search phrases for the day and it?s going to show you what landing page your possible client was sent to. If they clicked on the keyword Residence Based Small business and they had been sent to your Operate At Home page instead of your home Based Enterprise page then you understand modifications are essential. This will show that you should have household based enterprise set as a keyword in you operate at house campaign moreover to or instead of your house Base Organization campaign. You may either must delete it and add it for your Dwelling Based Small business Campaign or move it there according to the search engine.

One more tool it is possible to use will be to add a totally free counter for your page. There are numerous on the net that track urls in order that not simply are you able to see the ip address, time, landing page, length of time on your website, but quite a few occasions it will show you the keyword searched for at the same time. It?s going to help you see what requires to me modified on an ongoing basis.

Every single subtle change in your web-site landing page, keyword phrases, keyword bidding, regardless of how minuscule, has an effect on your buyer. I often advise transform, monitor, analyze, modify and preserve continuing the course of action. Evaluate the new adjust to the old one particular in order that you may see which landing page converts best.

The BBC's Pallab Ghosh, who interviewed Armstrong, says he had an ''ice cool attitude'' which made him an excellent astronaut

US astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, has died aged 82.

A statement from his family says he died from complications from heart surgery he had earlier this month.

He set foot on the Moon on 20 July 1969, famously describing the event as "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind".

US President Barack Obama said Armstrong was "among the greatest of American heroes - not just of his time, but of all time".

Last November he received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest US civilian award.

He was the commander of the Apollo 11 spacecraft. More than 500 million TV viewers around the world watched its touchdown on the lunar surface.

Armstrong and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin spent nearly three hours walking on the moon, collecting samples, conducting experiments and taking photographs.

"The sights were simply magnificent, beyond any visual experience that I had ever been exposed to," Armstrong once said.

'Reluctant hero'

Mr Aldrin told the BBC's Newshour programme: "It's very sad indeed that we're not able to be together as a crew on the 50th anniversary of the mission? [I will remember him] as a very capable commander."

Apollo 11 was Armstrong's last space mission. In 1971, he left the US space agency Nasa to teach aerospace engineering.

Born in 1930 and raised in Ohio, Armstrong took his first flight aged six with his father and formed a lifelong passion for flying.

He flew Navy fighter jets during the Korean War in the 1950s, and joined the US space programme in 1962.

Correspondents say Armstrong remained modest and never allowed himself to be caught up in the glamour of space exploration.

"I am, and ever will be, a white-socks, pocket-protector, nerdy engineer," he said in February 2000, in a rare public appearance.

In a statement, his family praised him as a "reluctant American hero" who had "served his nation proudly, as a navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and astronaut".

The statement did not say where Armstrong died.

He had surgery to relieve four blocked coronary arteries on 7 August.

The Oatmeal's Fundraiser Tops $1M Toward Tesla Museum

The Oatmeal's call to raise funds for a museum celebrating Nikola Tesla seems to have electrified enough people. From Digital Trends: "The Oatmeal has raised over $1 million on IndieGoGo in an effort to secure Wardenclyffe, the site of Tesla's final laboratory, to build a museum dedicated to Tesla. ... [Oatmeal founder and artist Matthew] Inman?s original goal of $850,000 would buy just half of the cost of the property, but the state of New York has agreed to match contributions, bringing total funds up to $1.7 million. Raising the capital to build a museum from the property will be another cost, but from the looks of it, with 36 days left and having already surpassed the $1 million mark, there should be funds to spare."

France's Hollande says Greece must remain in euro

PARIS (AP) ? French President Francois Hollande praised the Greek people on Saturday for making painful budget cuts, while urging them to do more to show their commitment to reforms to keep their country in the euro zone.

"For me, the question should no longer be asked: Greece is in the eurozone," Hollande said after meeting Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras in Paris.

But like German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Hollande offered Greece no immediate relief from its current regime of painful austerity measures.

The Greek premier has been on a swing through European capitals as part of his country's push to win more time to carry out wrenching cuts to avert fiscal crisis.

On Friday, Merkel met with Samaras in Berlin and said she expects Greece to meet its previous commitments, while stressing Germany wants to keep it in the euro.

Hollande also said that any decision on delays for Greece must wait for a report next month by the "troika" of Greece's debt inspectors ? the EU's executive Commission, the European Central Bank, and the International Monetary Fund.

Greece, Hollande said, "must demonstrate the credibility of its program and the willingness of its leaders to go all out all the while making sure that it is tolerable for the population." He said Europe needs to make decisions about Greece "the sooner the better" ? notably after the report is presented to a European Union summit in October.

"In the face of ordeals, we must show more solidarity. ... I hailed the efforts that the Greek people have committed to painfully for the last two years," Hollande said. "We need to be aware of all that has been done."

Samaras, for his part, noted continued pressure within the financial markets amid concerns that Athens might not hold to its reform plans ? and risk dropping out of the common currency.

"Some continue to speculate against Greece .... to speculate by saying that Greece won't pull through, that it can't stay in the euro zone," Samaras said. "I'm here today to say that will pull through ? it will stay in the euro zone."

"I also think we can fulfill our commitments and goals, reduce our deficits, reduce our debt, achieve the structural reforms that have begun ? privatizations ? and justice," he added.

Following the leaders' comments to reporters, a Hollande adviser said the two men had also discussed the increasing flow of Syrian refugees into Greece and Cyprus as they fled fighting linked to the bloody rebellion against President Bashar Assad's regime.

A money management plan for your Nuclear Family | Firstpost

Last week, Firstpost started a series on financial planning with a focus on?TwentySomethings - early career people with cash to save and invest.

But what?s in it for you, if you aren?t a Twenty-Something? And have spouse and kids to boot. Well, here we go, with something that might work for the average nuclear family, but with no financially-dependent parents.

Your life: American author Hervey Allen once said: ?The only time you really live fully is from thirty to sixty. The young are slaves to dreams; the old servants of regrets. Only the middle-aged have all their five senses in the keeping of their wits.?

The truth is, you will need all the wits you can get in the initial 10 years of your newly-acquired status in the mid-30s, when every responsibility suddenly seems real, unlike in the 20s. When you are in your 20s, you don?t even realise how soon time flies, and one day suddenly you find yourself married, with a kid or two, paying for a home loan, a car loan and many other things.

The nuclear family needs to start financial planning early too. Reuters

Standing in a never-ending queue for school admission for the elder kid while talking to a client on the phone and simultaneously wondering about the vaccination of your ankle biter. When family, work (ambition) and living the good life take so much of your time, looking seriously into money matters takes the backseat. If you are one such person, read on. If you haven?t been smart in your 20s with your money, there?s still time to get it right. If you ignore the 30s, in the years to come you will only see your money life get messier.

Start from the start: Just as you begin language classes with A, B, C, you begin a financial plan from the basics: some simple financial goals. This might sound a bit obvious that one must have short (less than five years), middle (7-10 years) and long term goals (20 years plus). But, it?s the most important step. For instance, as a short-term goal, you may need to plan for the kid?s primary school fees, which could be even as high as Rs80, 000 a year. Or more. Your bow-wow?s vaccination could cost up to Rs 25, 000 a year. Mid-terms goals could be a car (may be a second one), a family vacation abroad, kids? higher education; long-term goals could mean buying a bigger house, and retirement needs.

Rainy Day: Emergencies like troubles come unannounced. The best strategy is to be prepared for them. Hence, begin with an emergency fund. Says Sadique Neelgund, a Mumbai-based Certified Financial Planner: ?Have at least three to six months? expenses kept aside as an emergency fund. This includes monthly living expenses, lifestyle expenses as well as EMIs for your loans.? So, if an emergency arrives, you don?t need to take a loan, or ask family or friends for money or even sell your existing assets. This applies to both, single-income and double-income families.

Budget: The next step is to know where you stand financially. Start by gathering all your financial documents and know what your net worth and debts are as a family. Make a budget, and a saving and spending plan. Your monthly budget is generally made of five parts; household expenses, lifestyle expenses, insurance expenses, due liabilities and savings and investments. Increase savings by reducing a few variable expenses like lifestyle expenses (eating out, expensive gadget purchases, for example) . So, instead of movies and mall every weekend, cut it down to every other weekend. Go to the park with your kids instead. You will be surprised how much you will save. Of course, the spouse may not like this, but financial planning for a nuclear family is all about team work.

Dumb Debt: One of the biggest temptations an average nuclear family faces is debt. Most of the salary (or salaries in case of double-income families) goes as living expenses, and other part goes to lenders, meeting kids? demands, and some status symbol expenses. (Let?s be honest, we all want to show how successful we are, some time or the other). So credit cards seem like an answer to the problem. Then soon you get into the habit of carrying forward your credit card dues beyond the monthly cycle.

If both partners have credit card debt, the matter becomes even more serious. If you are in such a place, we recommend you visit a credit counsellor right away as a couple. Unless you fix the (card debt) hole at the bottom of the pot, your (money) pot will never get full. Ideally, debt, savings, and living expenses should each account for one-third of your monthly family income around the mid-30s. But that?s the ideal and may not apply to your specific needs. Either way, ensure no more than 35 percent of your monthly income goes to servicing the debt. Aggressively start pre-paying debts by trimming down variable expense and by using windfall incomes (bonuses, special performance incentives) for this purpose. Repayment of credit card debt takes priority over any other kind of debt. Jayant Pai, Mumbai-based Certified Financial Planner, says: ?Pre-paying, especially home loans, is a good idea. This way you become debt-free sooner and also own the house sooner.? If possible, also pre-pay small amounts of non-credit card debts. What cancer could be to your body, irresponsible use of credit cards could be to your money life. So, clean off card debt first.

Medical Insurance: Medical cover for each member of the family is a must. You don?t want sickness to erode your savings. The medical cover which your employer offers covers your spouse and kids. But what if you switch jobs? Pai says, ?The insurance regulator allows you to port your group health insurance policy to individual health insurance by the same insurer. Check with your insurer is that is possible.?

We suggest that you buy a separate family floater policy as well. Neelgund says, ?Ensure that it covers at least between Rs 3-5 lakh.? Next, look into buying a serious disease disability policy, an accidental death-cum-disability insurance for yourself and wife, if both are working.

If you plan to have another kid, you don?t really need to buy a separate insurance policy which offers maternity cover. Says Kiran Telang, another Mumbai-based Certified Financial Planner, ?Most group insurance policies provide maternity cover. Don?t buy a separate policy with maternity cover. It anyway does not make sense, since the cover is usually very low, around Rs 50,000 while maternity costs could be as much as Rs 1 lakh these days. Instead, you should invest in debt-oriented mutual funds through systematic investment plans (SIPs), to build a corpus for planned maternity expenses.?

Life Insurance: Life insurance is a must. Telang says, ?If both the partners are working, have a life insurance cover for both. If it?s a single income family, say the husband works while the wife is a homemaker, buy a life cover only for the husband.? No need to buy a life policy in the homemaker?s name, not because her life does not have value but because it is priceless. Telang adds, ?As far as possible, stay away from insurance-cum-investment plans. Keep life insurance simple by getting a simple term policy.? Buying a term policy online is cheaper than offline policies. Life insurance cover should be equal to 12-15 times your annual expenses or 8-10 times your annual income. Remember to take into account the debts (like a home loan) you owe while deciding for a term cover. That way, your family won?t be asked to leave the home if you aren?t around. Also ensure that both partners at least make a paper will, to avoid unnecessary hassles.

Investments: The sooner you begin, the bigger the corpus you will be able to build in the long term. Also, as kids start growing up, their education and other needs will also bite into your savings. Your earnings may grow with time, but so will your lifestyle and needs.

For single-income families with a couple of kids, saving is going to be difficult, but you should at least save 10 percent of your income. For kids? higher education, you need to plan savings over 10-12 years. Says Neelgund, ?Don?t go for child education plans. Instead, just invest funds in equity Mutual Funds and Exchange Traded Funds.? Keep in mind, that two to three years prior to kids college admission, to move from equity to debt, so that you don?t expose the portfolio to unnecessary risk.?

As far as overall investment goes, have a healthy mix of equity and debt, based on your risk profile. If one spouse is a risk-taker and the other prefers risk-less investments, you probably are better off with a 50:50 equity:debt portfolio. Telang says, ?Don?t start with too many complicated products. Keep it simple. Once you understand simple products then move on to slightly complex ones. As of now, stay away from unit-linked insurance plans (Ulips).? Age-based asset allocation is for lazy investors. Rather, plan your portfolio based on your risk-taking capacity and the returns you need to meet your financial goals.

Retirement: Of course, you want to give your child the best, but that does not mean you ignore your own retirement. Expecting your kids to take care of you and the spouse financially when you?ll grow old isn?t right in this day and age. They will have their own financial worries to attend to when they grow up. If you truly want the best for your kids, ensure that you plan for retirement well in advance.

Some online retirement calculators can help you get the relevant numbers ? how much to save, depending on the number of years left in your career ? in seconds. Remember to keep this corpus separate from other financial goals such as vacations and kids? marriage expenses. The Employees? Provident Fund, the Public Provident Fund, and the National Pension Scheme are good retirement tools. Do yourself a favour and never withdraw your PF when you switch jobs to make a short-term status-related expense. Not even if both the partners are working.

Last, no plan is carved in stones. You will have to keep tweaking it as your financial and life status evolves. Good luck.

Romney turns to Ohio amid series of distractions

POWELL, Ohio (AP) ? Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney declared Saturday that "women need our help" as he promised to promote women-led businesses should he defeat President Barack Obama in November's election.

The appeal came as the former Massachusetts governor tried to shrug off a series of unwanted distractions before the Republican convention opens Monday in Florida.

"Just a word to the women entrepreneurs out there, if we become president and vice president, we want to speak to you, we want to help you," Romney said with running mate Paul Ryan at his side during an outdoor rally that drew an estimated 5,000 people to the Columbus area. "Women in this country are more likely to start businesses than men. Women need our help."

The promise comes as Republicans face difficult questions about the party's position on abortion after a Missouri Senate candidate suggested that women's bodies can prevent pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape."

It also comes less than 24 hours after Romney raised the discredited rumor that Obama wasn't born in the United States. The comment, and Romney's efforts to explain it, overshadowed his economic message as he campaigned near his Michigan birthplace on Friday.

Romney did not repeat the remark on Saturday, but instead assailed the Democratic incumbent for failing to deliver on his campaign promises.

"I can almost read his speech now. It'll be filled with promises and tell people how wonderful things are," Romney said of the speech Obama will give at the Democratic National Convention in North Carolina next month. "It is not his words people have to listen to. It's his action and his record. And if they look at that, they'll take him out of the office and put people into the office who'll actually get America going again."

At the same time, Obama used his weekend radio and Internet address and a new TV ad to highlight Romney's plans for the Medicare health program for seniors.

Obama doesn't mention his Republican challenger in the radio address but says the Medicare program is about keeping promises to millions of seniors who have put in a lifetime of hard work.

His new 30-second TV ad says Romney "would break that promise" and replace the current Medicare system with a voucher program that wouldn't keep up with costs.

"Insurance companies could just keep raising rates," says the new ad, which was airing in Iowa, Colorado, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia.

Romney spokesman Ryan Williams called the ad "another false attack from a desperate president." Williams said Romney is the one who would reverse billions of dollars in cuts to Medicare by Obama and protect the program for current beneficiaries and future retirees.

Romney's Ohio rally is expected to be his final public appearance before the Republican National Convention opens Monday in Tampa, Fla., where the former Massachusetts governor will formally accept the presidential nomination.

While GOP officials suggest the momentum is on their side heading into the crucial period, Romney and his party have faced tough questions in recent weeks on Medicare and abortion.

Now his joking reference to the president's birth certificate links him to the so-called birther movement and a wing of his party ? a combined 25 percent in an April Pew Research Center poll ? that says it either isn't sure or doesn't believe Obama was born in the U.S.

Romney caused another stir earlier in the week by declaring that big business was "doing fine" in the current economy in part because companies get advantages from offshore tax havens.

Still, polls suggest the presidential contest is essentially a tossup as Obama struggles under the weight of a weak economy.

The president's re-election campaign has pushed voter attention away from the economy in recent weeks, particularly after Romney introduced Ryan as his running mate. Ryan is the author of a controversial budget plan that would transform Medicare into a voucher-like system for future retirees.

Outside the Ohio rally, protesters heckled the presumptive GOP ticket about its plans for seniors' health care.

Speaking before Romney, Ryan said one in six Americans lives in poverty. He said the country is done being fooled by Obama's promises to change Washington.

Democrats also have seized on Missouri Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin's comment about "legitimate rape."

The congressman announced Friday that he would not leave the Senate contest despite overwhelming pressure from Romney and top Republican officials.

Romney made the birth certificate remark at a large outdoor rally in Michigan, where he grew up and where his father, George, served as governor. He told supporters that he and his wife, Ann, had been born at nearby hospitals.

"No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised," Romney said.

The crowd of more than 7,000 responded with hearty laughter.

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt swiftly denounced the remark, saying Romney "embraced the most strident voices in his party instead of standing up to them."

Romney later denied that the remark was directed at the president.

"No, no, not a swipe," Romney told CBS News. "I've said throughout the campaign and before, there's no question about where he was born. He was born in the U.S. This was fun about us and coming home. And humor, you know ? we've got to have a little humor in a campaign."

The authenticity of Obama's birth certificate has been questioned by Republican critics who insist he is not a "natural-born citizen" as required by the Constitution. Obama released a long-form version of his birth certificate last year as proof that he was born in Hawaii in 1961.

But conservative questions have lingered. And Romney has declined to condemn such questions, particularly from prominent donor Donald Trump.

The Obama campaign released a web video Friday night featuring Romney's remark and declaring that "America doesn't need a birther-in-chief." Democrats intend to keep the pressure on as the Republican convention gets under way.

Obama was spending the weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland, as Republicans began arriving in Tampa for their convention. But Democrats were planning to counter Romney's message throughout the week.

Reaching out to young voters, a key component of his 2008 election, Obama scheduled stops Tuesday and Wednesday in the college towns of Ames, Iowa; Fort Collins, Colo.; and Charlottesville, Va.

Vice President Joe Biden canceled plans to appear in Tampa on Monday because of Tropical Storm Isaac, but was scheduled to be in Orlando and St. Augustine, Fla., on Tuesday.

After Ryan gives his convention address on Wednesday night, first lady Michelle Obama is set to appear on CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman."

The high-profile events are paired with a number of smaller gatherings around the country by Democrats aiming to attract female voters and a bus tour with party activists in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Obama campaign deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said the president's team was "not going to cede four days of this campaign just because of a party convention."

The Importance Of Iridium Satellite tv for pc Connectivity ...

Preserving communications whilst out on the ocean is a difficult but very important science. Not being able to process and also send information from long distances can certainly produce a ship in essence useless. Although not the most frequent form of connectivity, but perhaps the most reliable, could be the use of iridium satellite tv for pc technology.

Probably the most distinguishing benefit from using iridium technology is the allowance for global connectivity. There is no place in the world it is possible to go where connectivity is going to be lost. This global aspect includes pathways, airways, and in many cases polar regions.

Another major benefit is its entry. Someone can have worldwide connectivity all within the confines of a single gadget such as a telephone. That sort of technology is difficult to find and an very helpful feature regarding connectivity bundle. Another thing to seek out when searching for any provider of this sort of technology is the supply to upgrade and customise your own bundle. Each customer features different requires and that client should have the liberty to buy any package which applies to his/her requires down to the letter.

Probably the most sought after options that come with iridium satellite marketing communications are high-quality regular voice program, SMS, e-mail and small-file data transfer useage, weather weight, large selection of accessories, advanced voice companies such as voicemail messages, call unless, forwarding, and also call restrictions, and information services as much as 128 kbps. It's pretty amazing the services, amid many others, treatment available in the maritime discipline. Much of this technology is possible by way of a service generally known as narrowband. This service carries data, normally voice information, over a slim stretch regarding frequencies, in contrast to broadband. This narrowband technology enables more accurate parts and a better power regarding communication.

One of the best features most companies that offer these services have is before mailing a message; a plan displays the price tag on the message transmission and asks the user in the event the message can be obtained to send. This really is great when it comes to cost manage, as iridium satellite tv for pc technology can get fairly harmful for the ship workers. In addition, it has entry for a ship manager to look at and manage all the information passing with the communications program to perform analysis about the ships expenses.

As this technology advances pricing is constantly dropping while at the same moment reliability and also usefulness is actually increasing. The use of iridium technology could be the way of the long run for ocean going purposes and definately will only keep growing in the future.

Space elevator visions are on the rise again

This is the LiftPort Group's basic model for its proposed Lunar Space Elevator Infrastructure, also known as LSEI or "Elsie." LiftPort says the system can be constructed within eight years using commercial technology.

By Alan Boyle

The space elevator concept has had its ups and downs ? but this year, it looks as if the concept's proponents are definitely trying to push the ?up? button again.

There?s a new Kickstarter project, aimed at setting the stage for a lunar space elevator. Space-elevator backers are trying to restart a competition for ultra-strong tethers. And a Japanese company has pledged to get the thing built ? by 2050.

But veterans of the movement say one big thing is required: a revolution in materials science, and specifically carbon nanotubes. Or maybe boron nitride nanotubes.

"The materials are still the long pole in the tent, and I don't see the government getting interested in it," Bryan Laubscher, the founder and president of Odysseus Technologies, told me today. "That's disappointing to me."

Laubscher and other space-elevator advocates will take stock of the past year's ups and downs at the annual International Space Elevator Conference, running from Saturday through Monday at Seattle's Museum of Flight.

Railway to the sky
The idea of building a "railway to the sky" has tantalized dreamers for decades: Just send a satellite up to geostationary orbit, 22,000 miles up (36,000 kilometers up). Send one line back down to Earth, and another line up to an altitude of about 100,000 miles (160,000 kilometers) with a counterweight at the end. Secure Earth's end of the line so it's rock-solid, then start sending robotic climbers up and down the line, carrying cargo and passengers.

If the idea can be executed, advocates say it could reduce the cost of access to orbit from its current level of $10,000 or so a pound to $100 a pound?? revolutionizing space travel and potentially opening the solar system to human settlement. That's the vision brought to life in science-fiction novels ranging from Arthur C. Clarke's "The Fountains of Paradise," published in 1979, to this year's opus by Kim Stanley Robinson, "2312."

Clarke once joked that the space elevator would be built "about 50 years after everybody quits laughing." Several years ago, LiftPort Group founder Michael Laine set up a countdown clock that predicted the "first lift" would come even sooner, in 2018. Today, six years seems way too soon, but at least people have stopped laughing.

The key sticking point has to do with the tethers, or cables, or ribbons that would be required to connect a terrestrial liftport with the elevator's orbital destination. Whatever they're made of, that connecting material would have to be stronger than any material that's manufactured today. A synthetic polymer called Zylon ranks among the strongest available, and space-elevator advocates measure its strength per unit of density at 3.9 megayuris. (The "yuri" is an unofficial measurement unit that was named after Russian space-elevator pioneer Yuri Artsutanov.) The specific strength of steel is about 0.5 megayuris. But the stuff of space elevators would have to be on the order of 30 to 100 megayuris?strong.

For years, NASA offered $2 million in prizes to encourage the development of 5-megayuri material, but that challenge expired after last year's contest. The International Space Elevator Consortium is trying to revive the prize program at a lower level, but that won't happen in time for this year's conference.

"I'm confident there's going to be a well-attended strong-tether challenge next year," Ted Semon, the consortium's president and director, told me. "It's our numero-uno mission."

Who's going to build it?
Laubscher thinks it's going to take a government-backed development effort on the scale of the telecommunications revolution of the 1960s to create the materials required for building space elevators.?"I actually think that the first space elevator will be built by the U.S. Department of Defense," he said. "The first one to build the space elevator owns space."

Carbon nanotubes are a good candidate, but lots of technical obstacles will have to be overcome in order to produce long, wide ribbons of carbon nanotubes that are strong enough and resilient enough to do the job. David Horn, the chairman of this weekend's conference, says boron nitride nanotubes offer 75 percent of the theoretical strength of carbon nanotubes and may be easier to manufacture.

"We haven't seen that it can't be done," Horn said of the space elevator concept. "But we really need to get this competition going to give people a financial incentive to do it."

Whether they're made of carbon or boron nitride or polymer, stronger materials will produce a payoff long before the elevator gets built ??in the form of lighter, more fuel-efficient automobiles, airplanes, boats and, yes, even spacecraft. Cheaper, safer, easier access to space would make a big difference in the financial calculations underpinning the space elevator dream. "The world that we'll have with carbon nanotubes will demand that we build a space elevator," Laubscher said.

Here are some of the developments along the road to the space elevator:

  • Liftport Group founder Michael Laine has just begun a Kickstarter campaign to raise $8,000 as the first step in what could be a multimillion-dollar effort to build a lunar space elevator, which is theoretically possible using existing technology. Liftport ran into financial and legal difficulties in 2007, and today Laine admits that "things went south for us" back then. This campaign, he says, marks Liftport's return to the fray after five dark years. "About six months ago, we had a fundamental breakthrough ... and we want you to be a part of it," Laine says in his Kickstarter video. It's debatable whether the lunar elevator concept will get off the ground, but Laine is optimistic. His current countdown clock calls for "first lift" ... presumably from the moon ... by Jan. 1, 2020.
  • In February, the Tokyo-based construction company Obayashi Corp. unveiled plans to transport goods and passengers in a space elevator as early as 2050, according to a report from Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun. The trip to an orbital station would take seven and a half days. "At this moment, we cannot estimate the cost for the project," an Obayashi official was quoted as saying. "However, we'll try to make steady progress so that it won't end up as simply a dream." Although there haven't been any progress reports lately, Laubscher said "the Japanese are way ahead of America" in their enthusiasm for the space-elevator vision.
  • Other places to watch for space elevator developments: One of the leading U.S. forums for carbon nanotube researchers is the Nanotechnology Materials and Devices Workshop, sponsored this year by the University of Cincinnati, the University of Dayton and the Air Force Research Laboratory. This year's workshop is set for Nov. 5-6 at the University of Dayton. Also, The New York Times reported last November that space elevators are on the agenda for the secretive Google X lab. "Google is collecting the world's data, so now it could be collecting the solar system's data," Rodney Brooks, an MIT professor emeritus and founder of Heartland Robotics, told the Times.

How realistic are these visions? Feel free to share your views in the comment space below. And if you're in the Seattle area, you might want to head on over to the Museum of Flight on Saturday. Even if you can't attend the three-day technical program for the International Space Elevator Conference, you can check out what's happening at the Family Science Fest.
